Current evidence does not show that ordinary smartphone use generally weakens memory or causes lasting memory decline. Researchers have studied different things—having a phone nearby during a task, actively using a phone, and patterns of measured or self-reported use—and those exposures do not produce one simple answer. A phone may compete for attention in some situations, but that is not the same as showing that everyday use damages memory over time.

What the evidence says about phones and memory

The broadest finding on a phone merely being nearby comes from a 2024 meta-analysis by Hartanto and colleagues. It combined 166 effect sizes from 33 studies, 53 samples and 4,368 participants. The pooled effect on cognitive outcomes was not statistically significant: d = −0.02, 95% confidence interval [−0.06, 0.01], p = .246. The authors also found no moderation by demographics, smartphone dependence, or the methods used to place phones and assess cognition. Read the meta-analysis record.

That result applies to the studies of phone presence and the cognitive outcomes they measured. It does not settle every possible effect of actively using a phone, distracting notifications, or problematic use. It does, however, weigh against a blanket claim that simply having a smartphone nearby reliably drains cognition.

Why the studies can seem to disagree

“Memory” covers several abilities, and the studies do not test the same exposure or outcome. A laboratory task with a phone on a desk is not a measure of years of everyday use; working memory is not identical to remembering an appointment or recalling a list later.

Study question What was measured What the result can show
Is a phone merely present? Controlled tasks with a participant’s phone nearby or elsewhere A short-term effect of phone presence in that task setting, not lasting damage from everyday use.
Does ordinary use relate to cognitive performance? Logged use, checking, self-reports and executive-function tasks An association in the studied participants; observational relationships do not establish cause.
Does internet-use frequency relate to recall? Immediate and delayed word recall in an observational population study A relationship between reported internet use and recall, not a test of smartphone use causing improvement or harm.

Working memory and the “Brain Drain” experiments

In 2017, Ward, Duke, Gneezy and Bos reported lower working-memory capacity and fluid-intelligence performance when participants’ own smartphones were present. In the second experiment, participants whose phone was in another room outperformed those whose phone was on the desk on an operation-span working-memory task. Whether the phone was powered on did not explain the result, and the authors reported that smartphone dependence moderated the effect. These were controlled task findings, not evidence that participants had lost memory ability permanently. Read “Brain Drain”.

Short-term and prospective memory

A 2020 study tested short-term memory and prospective memory—the ability to remember to do something later—and found no overall effect of phone presence on either outcome. It reported a moderation result for prospective memory among participants with low smartphone dependency, but concluded that the earlier working-memory finding did not generalize to these memory domains. What studies of active smartphone use find

A 2023 latent-variable study of 260 young adults combined objectively logged screen time and checking with nine executive-function tasks. It found no evidence that normative self-reported use, logged screen time or checking was associated with latent inhibitory-control, task-switching or working-memory-capacity factors. Self-reported problematic smartphone use was associated with the task-switching factor. That association does not show that smartphone use caused the difference, and task switching is not the same as general memory loss. Read the study record.

A separate 2019 paper examined phone presence in relation to learning and memory. It also discusses “daily-life disturbance” as a component of a smartphone-addiction scale; that is a self-reported measure of interference with activities, not a clinical diagnosis or proof that ordinary phone use damages memory. Does relying on your phone make you forget things?

Using a calendar, map or reminder can change where information is stored: instead of memorizing a detail, you may remember how to retrieve it. The studies summarized here do not establish that this everyday reliance causes lasting memory decline. Nor do they establish that smartphone tools improve memory. A missed reminder or an inability to recall a detail without checking a device is not, by itself, evidence of phone-induced memory damage.

It is also too broad to say that digital activity uniformly harms memory. In an observational analysis of 36,542 participants from Wave 3 of the UK Household Longitudinal Study, collected in 2011–2012, Kang and Malvaso found that internet-use frequency was positively associated with immediate and delayed word recall. The study was about internet use, not a smartphone experiment, and cannot show that internet access improves memory. Read the study.

What to take away

  • Evidence on a phone’s mere presence is mixed in individual experiments, while the 2024 meta-analysis found no significant overall cognitive effect.
  • A result on one task—such as working-memory capacity—does not establish an effect on short-term memory, prospective memory, learning or episodic recall.
  • The reviewed studies do not show that ordinary smartphone use causes lasting memory decline over years.
