Yes—undervolting can reduce a GPU’s power draw and the heat it produces, provided it runs a similar workload at similar performance. The savings are not automatic: a GPU may use some of the electrical headroom to boost to higher clock speeds, and results depend on the card, workload, cooling, and voltage-and-frequency settings.

What an undervolt changes

A GPU needs electrical power to perform work. Reducing its operating voltage can lower power use, particularly when the workload and clock speed stay about the same. Lower power also means the cooler has less heat to dissipate under otherwise similar conditions.

But GPUs adjust their performance dynamically. NVIDIA’s nvidia-smi documentation describes power management that operates within a power envelope and can reduce clocks when power draw exceeds the limit. If an undervolt creates room for higher boost clocks, the card may deliver more performance while using a similar amount of power—or use less power than before, but not as much less as expected.

Undervolting and lowering a power limit are related but distinct. An undervolt changes the voltage used at a given operating point; a power limit sets a ceiling on consumption. Power management may reduce clocks to stay within that ceiling. NVIDIA’s documentation describes these power-management behaviors; they should not be treated as the same adjustment.

What that means for electricity use and heat

Electricity use depends on the workload and performance

To determine whether an undervolt saves electricity, compare power while the GPU performs the same task at a similar performance level. A lower wattage reading accompanied by a lower frame rate or benchmark score may simply mean the GPU is doing less work. If performance rises while power stays similar, the undervolt may have improved efficiency without reducing consumption for that workload.

For energy over time, average power matters more than a brief peak: sustained watts multiplied by hours gives watt-hours. A bill saving therefore depends on the actual power change, how long the GPU runs under that workload, and the electricity rate. There is no single bill-saving percentage that applies to all GPUs or users.

Temperature depends on more than voltage

Less board power generally means less heat for the cooling system to remove if workload and performance are comparable. The observed temperature also depends on the cooler, fan behavior, case airflow, room temperature, workload duration, and the GPU’s clock adjustments. A lower temperature is possible, not guaranteed by a particular voltage change.

NVIDIA’s IGX thermal-management guide describes reducing clocks and rail voltages as a way to reduce power and help control temperature on that platform. It is platform-specific guidance, not a recommended undervolting procedure for consumer graphics cards.

What published measurements show—and do not show

Price, Barsdell, Greenhill, Clark, and Babich reported that GPU power consumption varies nonlinearly with both temperature and supply voltage. In a 2014 experiment, they found that lowering voltage and increasing clock frequency while maintaining a low die temperature improved the power efficiency of an NVIDIA K20 by up to 37–48% over default settings while running xGPU, a compute-bound radio-astronomy workload. The result is specific to that card, workload, and operating strategy; it is not a prediction for a gaming GPU or a household electricity-bill reduction. See the study: Power and Energy Characteristics of GPUs.

NVIDIA’s nvidia-smi documentation describes board-power and temperature readings, but availability varies by device. It does not establish a universal safe undervolt, expected temperature drop, or consumer-card energy saving.

How to check your own GPU

Use a repeatable game, benchmark, or compute workload and keep other settings as consistent as possible. Record power, temperature, clock speed, performance, and stability both before and after the undervolt.

  1. Establish a baseline: Run the chosen workload at stock settings and note board power in watts, GPU temperature, clock speed, and a performance measure such as frame rate or benchmark score.
  2. Apply an undervolt using the tool and controls supported for your GPU: There is no model-independent voltage value or procedure established here, so do not assume a setting that works for one card is suitable for another.
  3. Repeat the same workload: Keep the performance target and other settings comparable, then record the same measurements. NVIDIA’s nvidia-smi documentation describes supported board-power and temperature telemetry; some readings depend on the device.
  4. Check stability: Watch for crashes, visual artifacts, or calculation errors during the workload. Treat a setting that produces errors or instability as unsuitable for that use.
  5. Compare the results together: Check whether lower power or temperature came with similar performance, and consider fan behavior if you are tracking noise. A wattage change alone does not show whether efficiency improved.

For a useful comparison, note the GPU model, workload, measurement method, and relevant cooling and ambient conditions. A single short reading may not represent sustained use.
