Installing TWRP does not automatically void every phone warranty. Coverage depends on your device’s warranty terms, where you bought it, and whether the problem was caused by unlocking the bootloader or modifying the software. The bootloader-unlock warning that says “may void warranty” is a reason to check the exact terms—not proof that every claim will be rejected.
What the bootloader warning means
Android’s documented bootloader-unlock flow displays the warning “Unlock bootloader (may void warranty).” The word “may” matters: the warning signals a possible consequence, but it does not establish one universal warranty rule for all manufacturers, devices, or countries. Android also explains that unlocking can enable custom operating-system software that has not had the same testing as the original OS, potentially causing the device or installed apps to stop working properly. What can affect warranty coverage?
Manufacturers’ terms and local consumer protections are not identical. A key practical distinction is whether the fault is plausibly connected to the modification or is an unrelated defect; the exact terms and applicable law still matter.

Manufacturer warranty and legal rights are different
A manufacturer’s commercial warranty is not necessarily the only protection available. Google describes its EEA limited warranty as voluntary and separate from statutory rights. In the EU, consumer guidance states that faulty goods have a minimum two-year legal guarantee, subject to national rules and purchase details. For a real claim, identify the country where you bought the device and review the warranty supplied for that sale. The EEA and US manufacturer examples above illustrate why geography and device-specific terms matter; neither settles the rules for other jurisdictions.
Can you get a phone repaired after unlocking the bootloader?
Possibly. An unlocked bootloader or custom recovery does not, by itself, tell you whether a particular repair will be covered. The manufacturer may consider its terms, the type of failure, and whether the modification caused or contributed to it. A fault plausibly caused by an unsuccessful flash may be treated differently from an unrelated hardware defect, but the cited terms do not guarantee the result in either case.

Android notes that a device may record whether its bootloader was unlocked and/or relocked. Do not assume that relocking or reinstalling stock software erases every record or guarantees warranty service. Android Open Source Project: Locking and unlocking the bootloader.
Why TWRP can complicate official updates
TWRP says official manufacturer or carrier updates are not supported. Updates may be differential, modified system partitions can cause unexpected behavior, and manufacturers may change recovery in ways TWRP does not know about. TWRP recommends returning to a completely stock configuration—including replacing TWRP with stock recovery—before attempting an official update. TWRP: Official OTA Updates.

The restoration procedure depends on the specific device. Follow instructions for the exact model rather than assuming that one generic process applies. Returning to stock may help prepare for an update, but it is not proof that all modification traces are gone or that a warranty claim will be approved.
What to check before installing TWRP
- Identify the exact model and sales region. Warranty coverage may differ between devices and markets, even when their names are similar.
- Read the warranty terms for that purchase. Look for clauses concerning bootloader unlocking, rooting, altered software, installation errors, and damage caused by modifications.
- Consider the failure risk. Unlocking can wipe personal data, and custom software can impair the device or apps. Back up data before proceeding, and understand the device-specific recovery steps.
- Check update compatibility. TWRP does not support official manufacturer or carrier updates; returning to stock, including stock recovery, may be needed before attempting one.
- Keep the modification and any failure in context. If you later need service, explain what was changed and describe the fault accurately. The warranty provider—not the bootloader warning alone—will assess the claim under the applicable terms.
Does returning to stock restore warranty?
Returning to stock can restore the manufacturer’s software and recovery configuration, which TWRP recommends before official updates. It does not necessarily erase device records of unlocking or relocking, and it cannot guarantee that a manufacturer will approve a warranty claim. Whether coverage applies still depends on the applicable warranty, local rights, and the cause of the problem.
