Turning off Windows 11’s Animation effects removes animated transitions from the interface and may make Windows feel more responsive. Try the setting if you prefer a snappier-feeling interface; treat it as a small adjustment, not a fix for every slow PC.
What changes when you disable Animation effects?
In Windows 11, Animation effects control motion such as fades and slides when menus and windows appear or change. With the setting off, those transitions no longer play. The PC may feel more immediate, but the change is about interface presentation; it does not establish faster internet, file transfers, games, or demanding applications.
A September 24, 2026 report described its author noticing a subjective improvement on an older spare laptop after disabling visual effects. It supplied no controlled before-and-after measurement, so the experience is a useful reason to try the setting—not a prediction of the result on your computer. Microsoft likewise lists adjusting visual effects as one possible way to improve responsiveness because they can use system resources: Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance.
How to turn off Animation effects in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects.
- Switch Animation effects off.
- Use Windows normally and decide whether the simpler transitions feel better to you.
You can switch Animation effects back on from the same page if you prefer the animated interface.

Animation effects and Transparency effects are different
The same Visual effects page has a separate Transparency effects switch. Animation effects change motion and transitions; Transparency effects change translucent backgrounds in parts of the interface. Turning one off does not require turning off the other. Choose based on the appearance you want rather than assuming both settings have the same performance effect.
Use the classic Performance Options panel for selective changes
Windows also has a classic panel for choosing visual effects individually. Open Start, search for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, and open the matching result. On the Visual Effects tab, select Custom to turn particular effects on or off instead of applying one all-or-nothing choice. This lets you weigh appearance against responsiveness, keeping effects you value while removing others. The cited report’s preferred boxes to keep are personal recommendations, not a Microsoft ranking.

If Windows still feels slow
Visual effects are only one possible contributor to sluggishness. Microsoft’s performance guidance notes that results depend on the PC and the cause of the slowdown; older hardware may not improve much through settings changes. Consider other causes rather than expecting this toggle to resolve a broader performance problem.
Check background app activity
Background app permissions are separate from visual effects. For supported apps, Windows can allow or restrict background activity; apps that run in the background may sync information or send notifications. Review apps that launch at startup
Startup apps are another separate issue: they launch as Windows starts and can affect responsiveness. Microsoft Learn explains how to review them in Task Manager and interpret the startup impact indicator: startup app guidance. These controls do not change Animation effects.
Use a clean boot to investigate conflicts
If you suspect a startup app or service is causing a problem, Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure can help isolate it: Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions. A clean boot can temporarily remove functionality while you troubleshoot, so follow the steps carefully and restore normal startup afterward.

Windows 10 support status
The steps above are for Windows 11. If you are using Windows 10, Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended after October 14, 2025. Consult Microsoft’s performance and support guidance for current information relevant to your version.
