Yes, in early laboratory and preclinical research—not as a ready-to-use implant. Studies have tested porous scaffolds made through tofu processing and related soybean-based materials. Some reported cell attachment and growth, and modified tofu-based constructs have been investigated for bone regeneration. Ordinary grocery-store tofu is not a validated medical material, and these studies do not show that tofu-based scaffolds are safe or effective in people.
What researchers mean by a tofu scaffold
In this research, “tofu scaffold” means a porous material prepared through tofu-making processes or from soybean protein. A scaffold is a structure intended to give cells a surface or framework on which to attach and grow. The experimental materials are not simply blocks of edible tofu inserted into the body: some were crosslinked or combined with other biomaterials.
Huang and colleagues’ 2018 study evaluated two porous soybean scaffolds: one based on traditional tofu manufacturing and another modified through covalent crosslinking. The researchers examined material structure and properties, as well as biocompatibility in laboratory and animal tests. Their conclusion was that tofu-processing-derived soybean scaffolds had potential as food-source biomaterials—not that they were clinically established. Read the 2018 paper at the Royal Society of Chemistry or view its PubMed record.

What the studies found—and what they did not
Cell response and early implantation findings
The 2018 study reported cell proliferation and cellular adherence with both scaffold types. In subcutaneous implantation tests, the authors reported no obvious inflammatory response. Those results are early evidence about particular experimental materials and models; they do not establish long-term safety, successful tissue replacement, or performance in people.
#1 Best Overall
- TRANSFORM WATERY TOFU INTO CRISPY, FLAVORFUL MEALS: Tofuture removes excess water from tofu blocks in 15–20 minutes, helping create firmer texture, crispier results, and better marinade absorption. Excess moisture prevents tofu from crisping properly and absorbing flavor. Press, cook, and taste the difference.
- PATENTED SELF-CONTAINED DESIGN – DISHWASHER SAFE & MESS-FREE: The Tofuture press uses an outer container, inner drainer, and silicone-band system to apply even pressure without countertop drips, paper towels, or soggy plates. Water collects neatly inside the container for quick, easy cleanup.
- PRESS, MARINATE & STORE IN ONE CONTAINER: The included silicone lid transforms the press into a convenient marinating and storage container. Press your tofu, add your favourite marinade, refrigerate, and cook directly from the same container with one less dish to wash.
- COMPLETE KIT WITH REPLACEMENT BANDS INCLUDED: Every Tofuture press includes the outer container, inner drainer, silicone lid, and a complete second set of replacement silicone bands. Built for years of regular use, the bands automatically apply steady, consistent pressure without manual adjustment.
- DESIGNED IN THE UK FOR EVERYDAY COOKING: Designed by tofu lovers, the Tofuture press works with firm, extra firm, and silken tofu, and is also suitable for pressing paneer. Made from BPA-free polypropylene, SATRA-certified for food contact, Vegetarian Society approved, and dishwasher safe.
Bone regeneration with a collagen-coated scaffold
A 2020 study examined a tofu-based scaffold with a collagen surface coating. Its record describes a porous, cytocompatible construct and reports better bone regeneration after two months of implantation. This is a finding for that modified construct in that study, not evidence that unmodified tofu regenerates bone or that the approach works as a human treatment. See the 2020 study record.
Tofu incorporated into a hydrogel
A separate 2020 study explored tofu incorporated into gelatin methacrylate hydrogels for potential bone-regeneration applications. This is a composite-material approach: its findings should not be attributed to tofu alone. See the PubMed record for the hydrogel study.

How related soy-protein research fits
Other studies investigate soy-based materials, but they are not direct substitutes for evidence about tofu scaffolds:
- Soy-protein porous structures (2015): Researchers described soy protein blended with gelatin, pectin, or alginate, chemically crosslinked and made porous through lyophilization, as possible platforms for skin-regeneration research. View the PubMed record.
- Shimitofu-inspired cryogel (2025): A study combined soy protein isolate, carrageenan, and sodium alginate in an edible porous cryogel for high-density cell culture in cultured-meat research. That application is cell culture for food production, not evidence of tissue repair in a patient. Read the study record.
These projects reflect broader interest in plant-protein scaffolds. Their different ingredients, processing methods, and intended uses mean that a result from one cannot automatically validate another.

How to interpret the evidence
| Approach | What was studied | What the findings can support |
|---|---|---|
| Tofu-processing-derived and crosslinked soybean scaffolds (2018) | Cell response and subcutaneous implantation | Early biocompatibility evidence for the tested materials; not proof of clinical safety or tissue replacement. |
| Collagen-coated tofu-based scaffold (2020) | Bone-regeneration potential; implantation findings reported after two months | A study-specific result for a modified construct; not evidence for grocery tofu or human efficacy. |
| Tofu-incorporated gelatin methacrylate hydrogel (2020) | A composite hydrogel for potential bone regeneration | Evidence about a material combination, not tofu by itself. |
| Soy-protein porous structures (2015) | Soy blends proposed for tissue-regeneration research | Related plant-protein scaffold research, not a replication of the tofu studies. |
| Soy-protein-based cryogel (2025) | High-density cell culture for cultured-meat research | Evidence for a food-production cell-culture application, not medical tissue regeneration. |
The available study records do not establish a human clinical application, an approved tofu-based implant, or a consumer treatment. They also do not provide a basis here for comparing exact recipes, pore measurements, mechanical performance, degradation, or sterilization across the materials. Those details matter to whether a scaffold can be manufactured consistently and used safely, so broad claims about practical readiness would go beyond the reported findings.
Can tofu help regenerate bone?
It has been investigated for that purpose in experimental research, particularly in a collagen-coated tofu-based scaffold study and in a separate tofu-containing hydrogel study. The reported bone-regeneration finding belongs to the specific construct and study conditions; it does not show that eating tofu, applying ordinary tofu, or implanting store-bought tofu will regenerate bone. No human treatment efficacy is established by these sources.

Is this something to try at home?
No. These are biomaterials studies, not DIY instructions or medical recommendations. Processing, composition, sterilization, and biological testing determine what material was actually studied; ordinary food tofu is not established as sterile or suitable for implantation. Do not use tofu or soy-protein products to treat an injury or replace medical care.
