Yes. The September 29, 2026 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered update made some older mods incompatible at release, but it did not break every mod permanently. CD PROJEKT RED specifically warned that mods containing XML files, script files, or w3strings would not work unless updated. Compatibility now depends on the individual mod’s current version, your game build, and your platform.
What changed with the Remastered update?
CD PROJEKT RED released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on September 29, 2026, as a free upgrade for eligible owners on the platforms listed in its release announcement. The publisher’s support guide said at release: “Mods containing xml files, script files, or w3strings will not work upon the release of the update.” It also says REDkit includes a way for creators to update those mods.
That warning describes compatibility at release, not a permanent status for every mod. An author may have since updated a mod, while another mod may still lack support. Do not assume that all mods are broken, or that a mod works merely because the game launches.
How to check whether a mod is compatible
- Identify your exact game version and platform. Check the version or build shown by your launcher or store, and note whether you are playing on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch 2. Compatibility can differ by game version and platform.
- Back up important saves. Keep a separate copy before changing a modded installation so you can restore it if a save or setup stops working.
- Read the mod’s own listing and latest release notes. Look for an explicit statement that it supports your installed build and platform. Review requirements, dependencies, known conflicts, and any notes about XML, scripts, or w3strings.
- For console use, check the platform label. The official mod page uses an “Available on consoles” tag to indicate console availability. A PC mod is not automatically usable on a console.
- Reintroduce uncertain mods cautiously. Disable or remove mods without a compatibility confirmation and launch the game. If the issue clears, re-enable confirmed mods in small groups. If it returns, narrow down the group and check the relevant mod pages for dependency or conflict notes.
The disable-and-retest approach is a cautious way to isolate a problem; CD PROJEKT RED does not publish it as a tested Witcher-specific checklist. If the game still has trouble after mods are removed, contact the support channel for your platform and include the game version, platform, mod list, and when the issue began. The available official guidance does not establish a guaranteed rollback, repair, or reinstall procedure.

Using the official cross-platform Mods menu
The in-game Mods menu is powered by mod.io and is available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, according to CD PROJEKT RED’s support guide. Installing through it requires a CD PROJEKT RED account linked to mod.io. Follow these steps:
- Open Mods from the game’s main menu.
- Log in to your CD PROJEKT RED account and link mod.io.
- Subscribe to the mods you want.
- Restart the game, then open Installed and confirm the mod appears and is checked.
Subscriptions can sync across platforms, but unsupported console mods are ignored. Use the “Available on consoles” tag on each mod’s page to check console support. A save created with mods enabled is marked with a mod.io cog icon. Required mods already installed can be used with a modded save offline, but you cannot install new mods while offline.

Cross-progression, saves, and console achievements
For a cross-progression save, the same set of mods must be enabled on both devices, and each mod must be supported on the destination platform. CD PROJEKT RED warns that “If a mod is missing or incompatible on the target platform, your save may not load correctly.”
On consoles, trophies and achievements are disabled when playing modded save files, according to the publisher’s support guide. Factor that in before loading a modded save if you want to earn console achievements.

What the early update activity does—and does not—show
In an October 1, 2026 report, PC Gamer senior editor Wes Fenlon counted more than 450 mods newly released or updated since the Remastered release. That is a dated count of release activity, not an official total or proof that every counted mod works on every platform. The only reliable check for a particular mod is its current listing and compatibility notes for your build and platform.

CD PROJEKT RED’s REDkit changelog lists version 5.0.1042178 dated September 29, 2026. Its notes describe creator-facing features including Witcherscript scope-based overrides, which let script mods specify a scope and add or override functions at runtime, potentially reducing conflicts in those cases, and script blobs that compile script mods into small blobs loaded at game start. These capabilities may help creators update or build mods, but they do not automatically repair existing mods.

REDkit is a modding tool from CD PROJEKT RED and Yigsoft. The publisher says PC owners can download it free through Steam, Epic Games Store, or GOG from its official REDkit page.
