Every Steam Deck model listed by Valve has a microSD card slot, so you can add storage without opening the console. For most owners, a UHS-I U3 microSDXC card is the easiest, reversible way to install more games. You can also replace the internal SSD, but that requires opening the Deck and following the instructions for your model.
How Steam Deck storage expansion works
Valve lists a high-speed microSD card slot on every Steam Deck model. Its specifications identify support for SD, SDXC and SDHC cards over UHS-I; Steam Support says any UHS-I card rated class 3 or better is supported. A UHS-I U3 microSDXC card is a suitable choice for adding game storage. UHS-II and UHS-III cards can work, but the Deck does not use their higher bus speeds.
Valve’s Steam Deck booklet describes adding up to 2 TB of storage with a microSD card. Treat that as Valve’s published capacity guidance, not an independently tested maximum. The booklet and hardware specifications establish that the card slot is intended for expandable storage, but do not specify a particular card brand or game-loading performance.
Install and format a microSD card
- Insert the card into the slot on the bottom surface of the Deck.
- On the Deck, open Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card.
- Confirm the format. Formatting erases the card, so copy any files you want to keep somewhere else first.
After SteamOS formats the card, it is ready for use as game storage. Format it in the Deck before installing games rather than assuming a card’s existing contents or format will be ready for SteamOS.

MicroSD card or internal SSD replacement?
| Factor | microSD card | Internal SSD replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Insert the card and format it in SteamOS; no chassis opening is needed. | Requires opening the Deck and careful, model-specific work. |
| Cost | Depends on the card you choose; no current price is established here. | Depends on the replacement SSD and tools; no current price is established here. |
| Portability | Removable and easy to move between compatible devices, though formatting and device compatibility matter. | Installed inside the Deck rather than removable for routine use. |
| Game-load performance | Valve specifies UHS-I support, but the cited specifications do not provide comparative game-load times. | The cited replacement guides cover the procedure, not comparative game-load benchmarks. |
| Risk and effort | Simple and reversible; formatting erases the card. | More involved, requires tools and careful handling, and may require SteamOS recovery or re-imaging. |
When to replace the Steam Deck SSD
Replacing the internal SSD is an option if you specifically want more built-in storage and are comfortable with a hardware repair. iFixit publishes separate SSD replacement guides for the LCD and OLED models. The process involves opening the chassis; remove any microSD card before opening the Deck. The OLED guide also points to Valve’s recovery instructions for repairing or re-imaging SteamOS, which may be needed after the replacement.
Use the guide for your exact Deck model and follow its precautions. Unlike adding a card, an SSD swap is not a quick, external storage change; it calls for tools and careful handling.
