Sometimes. The free Microsoft 365 offer on an HP laptop auto-renews only when the offer was activated with recurring billing and a payment method that Microsoft can charge. A trial started through Microsoft’s website generally charges the saved payment method when the first free month ends unless you turn off recurring billing. By contrast, Microsoft says a trial started by clicking an icon on a new PC ends automatically after one month and does not need to be canceled. HP promotional terms also describe automatic renewal at the then-current rate when a payment method is supplied.
The reliable answer for your laptop is on the Microsoft account used to activate the offer. Open Services and subscriptions, find Microsoft 365, and check whether the page shows a renewal date, an expiry date, Cancel, or Turn on recurring billing.
Why two people with the same HP laptop can see different billing rules
“Free Microsoft 365 offer” is a marketing description, not one universal subscription type. HP laptops can present different offers by model, country, purchase period, and activation route. The route used to claim the offer determines whether Microsoft expects a payment after the trial.
Trial started on Microsoft’s website
Microsoft’s consumer FAQ says the payment method supplied during a web sign-up is automatically charged at the end of the first free month so service continues without interruption. Recurring billing must be disabled before the trial ends if you do not want that charge. Microsoft also describes a 30-day window for canceling a free trial before billing; the exact end date shown in your account takes precedence over a generic “30 days” estimate.

Trial started from an icon on the new PC
Microsoft gives a different rule for a trial begun by clicking the Microsoft 365 icon on a new PC: the trial ends automatically after a month, and cancellation is not necessary. That wording applies to the activation path Microsoft describes, not automatically to every promotional card or preinstalled Office screen on every HP model.
HP promotion with a payment method
HP product documentation states that adding a payment method makes the subscription renew automatically at the then-current rate on the renewal date until you cancel. If you cancel before the one-month trial ends, HP says you avoid a charge. The price and date are offer-specific, so use the values displayed in your Microsoft account rather than relying on a number printed on the laptop box.
Compare the activation paths before deciding whether to cancel

This table describes the documented patterns, not a guarantee for every regional promotion. If the account page conflicts with the wording on a card, email, or setup screen, treat the account page’s status and date as the operative information for your subscription.
Check the actual status on your Microsoft account
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used when the HP offer was activated. A different personal account can show no subscription even when Office is installed on the laptop.
- Locate the Microsoft 365 entry and select Manage.
- Read the status and date carefully. A renewal date indicates recurring billing is scheduled; an expiry date indicates access is set to end without another payment.
- Look for the available action. Cancel or Turn off recurring billing starts the cancellation flow. Turn on recurring billing means recurring billing is already disabled.
Save the displayed expiry date and keep the confirmation email or a screenshot after making a change. Those records show which account was changed and when the subscription is scheduled to end.

How to stop Microsoft 365 from renewing
Use the following procedure for a subscription that shows an active renewal option.
- Open Microsoft Services and subscriptions and sign in to the activating account.
- Find the Microsoft 365 subscription and select Manage.
- Select Turn off recurring billing or Cancel, depending on the label Microsoft presents.
- Complete every confirmation prompt. Stopping at the first screen can leave recurring billing active.
- Confirm that the page now displays an expiry date or the Turn on recurring billing option.
- Record the expiry date and retain the confirmation email or a screenshot.
Microsoft says that turning off recurring billing prevents future billing. In the normal case, access continues through the already-paid or trial period until the displayed expiry date; cancellation does not usually end access immediately.
What the “Turn on recurring billing” button means
If the only billing control you see is Turn on recurring billing, recurring billing is already off. Microsoft says no further payment is due and the subscription ends on the expiry date shown on the page. Do not select that button unless you intentionally want to restore automatic renewal.

What if the page offers only “Cancel”?
Select Cancel and read the resulting confirmation screen. Microsoft may present the recurring-billing change as a cancellation flow; the important result is that the account shows an expiry date and no longer offers an active renewal date. Keep the confirmation evidence before closing the page.

What you keep after recurring billing is turned off
Turning off renewal is not the same as deleting the Microsoft account or uninstalling Office. Microsoft says your subscription normally remains usable until the expiry date displayed in Services and subscriptions. You can continue using the included apps during that period under the terms of the offer.
When a trial ends, Microsoft says Office can move to View Only mode. In that state, documents can be opened and printed, but editing and creating new documents are unavailable. Subscription services tied to the plan, including extra OneDrive storage and Skype minutes, are also lost after the subscription ends. Copy important files out of any storage allowance you will no longer have before the expiry date.
How to tell whether a charge is actually scheduled
Do not infer billing from the presence of Word, Excel, or a Microsoft 365 shortcut on the HP laptop. Installed software can remain after a trial is canceled. Instead, use these account indicators:

- Expiry date: the subscription is set to end on that date; if the page also says Turn on recurring billing, Microsoft indicates that no further payment is due.
- Manage: opens the controls for the specific Microsoft 365 subscription. Check the date and billing state inside rather than relying on a general account overview.
- No Microsoft 365 entry: the offer may have been activated with another Microsoft account, may already have ended, or may have followed a non-subscription activation path. Sign out and check the account used during setup before assuming a charge is pending.
Dates, prices, and regional differences
The documented consumer examples use one month for the free period, while Microsoft Support describes 30 days as the window in which a free trial can be canceled before billing. Those descriptions refer to Microsoft’s guidance, not a promise that every HP promotion has identical timing. Your offer can differ by laptop model, country, edition, promotion dates, and the path used to activate it.

Likewise, a future price is not established by the word “free.” HP’s documentation refers to renewal at the then-current rate, which means the amount can change before the renewal date. The account page is the appropriate place to see the applicable renewal amount and date for your account. Avoid treating a launch offer, package insert, or old screenshot as the current price.

You clicked the HP or Office icon and never entered payment details
Microsoft’s documented new-PC-icon trial ends automatically after one month, so a cancellation action may not be required. Still, check Services and subscriptions to verify that the account shows an expiry date rather than a renewal date. If you did provide a payment method during setup, use the account status instead of assuming the icon-based rule applies.
You entered a card during setup and see a renewal date
Turn off recurring billing before the displayed renewal date. Follow the confirmation steps and verify that the account now shows an expiry date or Turn on recurring billing. The one-month period and the 30-day cancellation guidance are not substitutes for the date attached to your specific subscription.
You canceled but still see Microsoft 365 on the laptop
Cancellation changes billing and the subscription’s end date; it does not necessarily remove installed applications or shortcuts. Confirm the account status and expiry date. Until that date, the apps may continue to work; afterward, Microsoft says editing and creation can be restricted by View Only mode.

You cannot find the cancellation control
First verify that you are signed in to the Microsoft account that activated the offer. Then open the Microsoft 365 entry’s Manage page rather than looking only at a device’s Office application. If the page says Turn on recurring billing, cancellation is already complete. If no subscription appears in the correct account, the offer may have expired or may not be a recurring Microsoft 365 subscription; the status shown by Microsoft is more reliable than the laptop’s preinstalled software.
You are close to the end of the trial
Make the change before the renewal date shown in Services and subscriptions, then wait for the confirmation state to appear. Save the evidence immediately. Microsoft’s general 30-day guidance does not override an earlier date assigned to a particular promotion.
A quick decision checklist
- Identify the activation route: Microsoft website, new-PC icon, or an HP promotion that requested payment details.
- Open Services and subscriptions with the activating Microsoft account.
- Check whether the page lists a renewal date or only an expiry date.
- If renewal is active, choose Manage, then Turn off recurring billing or Cancel.
- Finish the prompts and confirm the page offers Turn on recurring billing or shows an expiry date.
- Keep the expiry date and confirmation message.
- Before the expiry date, copy files from any extra OneDrive storage you will no longer receive and plan for View Only behavior if you need to edit documents after the trial.
Bottom line for an HP laptop
The offer is not automatically renewable in every case. A Microsoft website trial or an HP promotion that collected payment details can renew and charge the then-current rate unless recurring billing is turned off. Microsoft’s specifically documented new-PC-icon trial ends after one month without requiring cancellation. Because offers vary, the decisive evidence is the Microsoft account page: a renewal date means act before billing, while Turn on recurring billing confirms that recurring billing is already disabled.
