In WIRED reviewer Molly Higgins’s sealed-tent smoke test, the Coway Airmega Halo cleared visible smoke quickly, but its blue “good” light appeared while a separate monitor still measured elevated PM2.5. The result raises a practical question—does the Airmega Halo detect smoke?—but one reviewer’s test does not establish how the purifier will respond in every room or for every owner.
What happened in the Coway Airmega Halo smoke test?
In a review published September 13, 2026, Higgins described using the Halo for nearly a month in several settings, including near a gas stove without ventilation, a window exposed to building and exhaust fumes, and a cat litter box. For the smoke test, she put the purifier in auto mode inside a sealed tent with smoke pellets and watched the smoke, the Halo’s indicator, and a separate indoor air-quality monitor. WIRED’s review reports these observations as one reviewer’s test, not an independently replicated lab result.
- At 1 minute 21 seconds, Higgins said visible smoke had cleared. The Halo had reached its highest fan speed, but had not entered turbo mode.
- At 1 minute 45 seconds, the Halo’s light turned blue, its “good” indication.
- At that point, her separate monitor showed 46.5 micrograms per cubic meter of PM2.5. WIRED equated that reading to AQI 128, which the review described as unhealthy for sensitive groups.
- Higgins reported that the Halo had returned itself to its lowest smart-mode setting while the separate monitor was still showing a high reading. Her monitor returned to normal nearly six minutes after the test began.
She also reported that smoke-pellet odor lingered in a bedroom that night, even with another purifier running. That observation is about odor under her test conditions; it does not by itself show how effectively the Halo removes smoke particles.
Why did the Halo turn blue while PM2.5 was high?
The review documents a mismatch between two readings, but does not establish its cause. Joe Haycock, vice president of Fresh Air Concepts, offered sensor placement as one possibility: “The stand-alone monitor [is] nearer to the source of the pollution, whereas the sensor built into the purifier is inside the unit and may be measuring air that has already gone through the device.” He also said the devices “might use different sensors or different criteria as to what constitutes a healthy level.” These are possible explanations, not confirmed findings about the Halo.

An intuitive color-coded AQI indicator shows air quality at a glance.
The review does not give the tent’s volume, the smoke pellets’ composition or mass, the monitor’s model or calibration, the number of repeat tests, or control measurements. Without those details, the reported times and PM2.5 value cannot establish a general detection failure or predict the purifier’s behavior in a typical home.
What does the Halo show you—and what does it leave out?
The Halo has color-coded air-quality lights and a top touchscreen, but no numerical pollutant-level display, app, Wi-Fi, or remote, according to WIRED. The color tells you the purifier’s own status; it does not let you compare its reading directly with a separate monitor’s PM2.5 number. Higgins also found the colors harder to interpret because they differ from US AQI color conventions.

The advanced digital display shows the exact remaining lifespan (100% down to 0%) for both the washable Pre-filter and Max2 Filter. You will know exactly when it's time to replace the Max2 filter (B0GXC2WN3M) or simply wash the Pre-filter once it hits 0%, ensuring optimal air quality at all times.
If you need to verify particle levels independently, a separate monitor can provide a numerical reading. When readings disagree, consider that the devices may be sampling air at different locations and may use different sensors or thresholds; the review does not show which explanation, if any, applied in this test.
How should you interpret the Halo’s room-coverage figures?
Coverage depends on how often the purifier can cycle the air in a room. WIRED gives 1,898 square feet at one air change per hour (ACH), but frames the ideal room size at about 474.5 square feet for four ACH. Those are different targets: the larger area does not mean the Halo provides four air changes per hour across 1,898 square feet.

When comparing purifiers, use coverage figures at the same ACH target. The review does not provide a like-for-like competitor test, so it cannot establish how the Halo compares with another model on smoke removal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What else matters in the Airmega Halo review?
WIRED describes the Halo as a cylindrical purifier with 360-degree intake, a pre-filter, HEPA filter, and activated-carbon layer. Higgins rated it 6/10 and noted its lightweight construction and quiet sleep operation, as well as the lack of wheels or a handle. She found the bottom panel difficult to remove; that is her individual usability experience, not evidence that every owner will have the same difficulty.

How to decide whether the Halo fits your needs
- Prioritize numerical feedback: The Halo provides color indications rather than an on-device PM2.5 number. Decide whether that level of feedback is enough or whether you would use a separate monitor.
- Match coverage to your target: Compare room sizes at the same air changes per hour, rather than relying on a headline coverage area alone.
- Consider the controls and upkeep: The review notes no app or remote and reports a difficult-to-remove bottom panel. Check whether those details matter for your placement and filter-access routine.
- Compare smoke performance on comparable evidence: Look for smoke CADR, room size at the same ACH, auto-mode response, and noise at equivalent settings. Higgins’s single test is not a head-to-head comparison.
