Yes, Starlink can work when another internet provider goes down—provided your Starlink equipment has power and Starlink service is available at your location. If your electricity goes out, an unbacked Starlink dish, router, and power supply cannot keep operating. A compatible UPS, battery, or generator may help, but compatibility and runtime depend on the specific kit.
What kind of outage are you dealing with?
A failure in your regular wired internet service is not the same as a Starlink outage. Starlink uses its own service and equipment, so another provider’s local failure does not by itself mean Starlink is offline. That is conditional: your Starlink kit still needs power, active service, a clear view of the sky, and Starlink service must be available in your area.

Starlink’s Critical Information Summary lists the dish, Wi-Fi router, and power supply as service components and identifies “reliability of power from the grid or problems with customer’s electrical power” as a factor that may affect performance.
Will Starlink work if the power goes out?
Not on its own. The dish, router, and power supply require electricity, so a grid outage interrupts Starlink unless a suitable backup source keeps the equipment powered.

Choosing backup power
A UPS, battery, or generator may be an option, but do not assume a particular unit will work with every Starlink model. Check the power requirements and input compatibility for your exact kit. Also consider whether the backup will power all the necessary equipment, how long you need service to continue, and whether you can recharge the battery or refuel the generator.
- Compatibility: Confirm that the backup’s output works with your Starlink power supply or kit.
- Capacity and runtime: Size it for the load and the duration you want. Starlink’s cited materials do not establish a universal backup runtime.
- Complete setup: Account for the dish, router, and power supply rather than assuming that powering only one component is sufficient.
- Portability: Consider recharge access, fuel, and where you will use the equipment.
A model-specific Starlink battery connection
Starlink’s Performance Accessories guide says the Advanced Power Supply can use AC or DC inputs, or connect both power sources when a battery backup is connected to the DC input. This guidance applies to that named Performance accessory; it does not establish that the same connection works with other Starlink kits.

Can Starlink work when your regular internet is down?
It can, as long as the outage is limited to another provider and Starlink remains available. Starlink’s app distinguishes a “SERVICE OUTAGE” from a “POWER DISCONNECT DETECTED” alert. A separate provider’s outage does not meet either condition by itself, but a Starlink service problem or loss of power can still take your connection offline.

How to troubleshoot a Starlink outage
- Check power first. Confirm that household power is available and that the Starlink power supply and router are receiving it. If the app reports “POWER DISCONNECT DETECTED,” Starlink advises checking the power source and cable connections.
- Read the Starlink app alert. Look for “SERVICE OUTAGE” or another device event. Starlink’s Event Log can include router-related outages as well as terminal connectivity events.
- Check service and equipment. If the kit is offline, check your account or subscription status and inspect the equipment and cables.
- Check the sky view and weather. Obstructions can cause outages; weather or temporary network issues can also interrupt service.
- Use instructions for your kit. Follow the official troubleshooting guidance for your Starlink model. Do not assume a third-party power supply or router setup follows the same troubleshooting steps.
