Single-tasking can be a useful way to manage avoidable distractions, but it is not proven to build a general-purpose attention “muscle.” Studies show that switching between tasks can carry costs and that practice can improve performance on particular switching tasks. They do not establish that a focused-work routine reliably boosts broad attention or workplace productivity.
Why switching can make work harder
Changing tasks can involve more than stopping one activity and starting another. The American Psychological Association describes time spent adjusting mental control to the new task and lingering competition from the previous task. In everyday work, you may also need to reconstruct where you left off and decide when to return. These effects matter when they conflict with the demands of the environment; not every switch is harmful. The APA puts it this way: “Problems arise only when switching costs conflict with environmental demands for productivity and safety.” American Psychological Association: Multitasking and switching costs.
What practice studies can—and cannot—tell us
Practice changes performance on trained tasks
A 2017 laboratory study used six successive practice sessions of a task-switching paradigm. At first, a longer preparation interval reduced switch costs for digit tasks; after practice, that reduction disappeared. The authors interpreted the result as consistent with improved preparation efficiency for non-perceptual task processes. It is evidence about performance in a specific experimental task, not proof that focused work transfers to every kind of attention or productivity. Frontiers in Psychology, 2017.
A 2020 study likewise found that practice appeared to reduce overall reaction times and switch costs toward an asymptotic level, while congruency effects and their modulation remained remarkably constant. In other words, some measured components changed with practice while others did not. Psychological Research, 2020.

A 2019 large-scale analysis of online cognitive-training data examined practice effects in cued task switching across adulthood. Its findings concern practice and performance on switching measures; they do not establish that one-task-at-a-time work causes broad real-world transfer. A large-scale analysis of task-switching practice effects across the lifespan.
Children’s training results are not adult workplace evidence
A 2025 Cerebral Cortex study enrolled children aged 8–11 in intensive task-switching training (72 participants), intensive single-task training (74), or passive control (41). Mixing costs initially decreased in both training groups, but only the task-switching group maintained those improvements at the end of the nine-week training. This result applies to children completing the study’s experimental tasks; it should not be presented as evidence that adult workers can train workplace focus by single-tasking. Cerebral Cortex, 2025.

How to practice focusing on one thing at a time
Try a modest routine as an experiment, not as a proven cognitive treatment. A 2026 personal account in The Atlantic describes choosing one daily priority, using phone focus controls or putting the phone away where feasible, and writing other reminders in a notebook. These are practical suggestions from an individual account, not randomized-trial findings or guaranteed ways to increase output. The Atlantic, 2026.

Decide which task deserves your next focused block, rather than treating every open task as equally urgent.
- Reduce avoidable interruptions. Where your responsibilities allow, silence nonessential alerts, use your phone’s focus controls, or move the phone out of reach.
- Capture stray reminders. Write down unrelated thoughts or tasks so you can return to them later instead of switching immediately.
- Return deliberately. When the block ends or an interruption is resolved, use your note or task list to pick up the next action.
When you should switch
Single-tasking is not a rule to ignore people, alerts, or changing conditions. If your work requires monitoring, rapid responses, or attention to safety, responsiveness is part of the task. The practical goal is to reduce switches that can wait, while making required switches promptly.

- Likely avoidable: checking a nonurgent notification in the middle of a task, or acting on a reminder that can be recorded and handled later.
- Required: responding to an urgent issue or an interruption tied to safety or an immediate work responsibility.
Does multitasking make you less productive?
Task-switching studies find costs in controlled tasks, but the evidence here does not establish a fixed productivity penalty for everyone or every kind of work. The effect depends partly on what the environment demands. A practical case for single-tasking is strongest when interruptions are optional and a task benefits from sustained attention; it is weaker when the job itself requires frequent monitoring or response.
