Self-hosting can keep prompts and responses from being sent to a model provider when inference runs locally, but it does not make the entire AI application private by itself. The interface, logs, retrieval database, backups, administrator access, and any remote services can still expose or retain data. The privacy boundary depends on the full deployment—not just where the model runs.
What does “local” mean for AI privacy?
With local inference, the model processes prompts on the machine or server where it is running. That can avoid sending prompt and response content to a hosted model provider. It does not automatically prevent other parts of the application from transmitting or storing that content.
For example, a local model may sit behind a web interface, middleware, or retrieval system that records prompts, sends error reports, stores conversation history, or calls a remote embedding or reranking service. Local inference narrows one path for exposure; it does not secure every component around the model.
What does Ollama say it collects?
Ollama’s privacy policy, last updated March 2026, says: “We do not collect, store, transmit, or have access to your prompts, responses, model interactions, or other content you process locally.” That statement applies to Ollama’s description of local processing; it is not a guarantee about every local-model runtime or an individual deployment. Read Ollama’s privacy policy.

The same policy says Ollama may collect limited device and usage metadata, including app version and request counts. It also distinguishes local use from cloud-hosted models: prompts and responses sent to a cloud-hosted model are processed to provide that service. Check the applicable provider policy and controls whenever a workflow uses a hosted model.
How does a hosted API change the data boundary?
A hosted API means prompt and response content is sent to the provider for processing. What the provider stores, for what purpose, and for how long depends on its policy and the controls available for the specific service.

OpenAI’s API documentation lists application state and abuse-monitoring logs among data that may be stored. It says abuse-monitoring logs may contain customer content, including prompts and responses, and are retained for up to 30 days by default unless a legal obligation requires longer retention. This is OpenAI-specific; it is not a rule for all hosted APIs or local models. Review OpenAI’s API data controls documentation.
OpenAI also says its business products do not train on organization data by default and describes encryption at rest and in transit. Those are statements about its business products; they do not establish how a self-hosted system is configured. See OpenAI’s security and privacy information.

Local inference and hosted APIs: what should you compare?
| Privacy question | Local inference | Hosted API |
|---|---|---|
| Who can access prompts and responses? | The model processes them on the local machine or server; access elsewhere depends on the application, infrastructure, and administrators. | The provider processes content sent to its service; access and handling depend on that provider’s policy and controls. |
| What may be retained? | Logs, retrieval data, conversation history, backups, and other local application records depend on the deployment. | Retention depends on the provider and service. OpenAI documents abuse-monitoring logs that may include customer content and are kept up to 30 days by default, subject to a legal-retention exception. |
| Who controls logs and backups? | The operator can set controls for systems they manage, subject to their infrastructure and access arrangements. | Provider controls and policies govern data handled by the service; customer controls may vary by product. |
| What other exposure matters? | Network access, authentication, storage permissions, and administrator access remain relevant. | Content travels to the provider, and the provider’s policies and service controls become part of the boundary. |
| What does an assurance establish? | A policy or configuration is not, by itself, independent verification of the deployment’s behavior. | A provider policy describes the provider’s stated practices; it does not establish how a separate self-hosted deployment behaves. |
Neither architecture is universally safer based on these distinctions alone. A policy describes stated handling; implementation controls and independently verifiable evidence answer different questions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to review a self-hosted AI deployment
- Map the data path. Trace prompts and outputs through the client, front end, middleware, inference server, retrieval database, and any connected tools or services.
- Find persistence points. Check prompt traces, conversation history, access and error logs, crash dumps, backups, and retrieval data. Identify who can access each store and how long it is kept.
- Check for external requests. Determine whether any workflow sends content to a hosted model, embedding service, reranker, telemetry endpoint, or error-reporting service.
- Review access and network exposure. Check authentication, network reachability, administrator privileges, storage permissions, and encryption for local files and backups.
- Verify the exact runtime configuration. Review telemetry and cloud features for the software version and configuration actually in use; do not assume defaults are identical across versions.
- Set retention and deletion rules. Decide how long logs and backups should remain, who can delete them, and how deletion is handled across copies.
- Separate policy from evidence. Treat provider statements as descriptions of policy, deployment settings as implementation controls, and audits or other independent checks as evidence of behavior.
What self-hosting does—and does not—promise
Self-hosting can reduce exposure to a model provider when prompts and responses stay on the machine running local inference. It does not prove that the application stores nothing, that no network requests occur, or that only authorized people can access the system. The practical answer comes from tracing the data, checking the actual configuration, and controlling storage and access across the whole deployment.
