Yes. Choosing a pump that matches a cooling system’s real flow and head requirements can affect its energy use—but the result depends on how the entire loop is designed and operated. A pump’s nameplate efficiency alone does not predict system savings. Measure the existing installation and compare it with a specific alternative before estimating the impact.
Why pump selection can change energy use
A pump uses energy to move fluid against the resistance of the system. Its performance depends on the duty it must meet—particularly the required flow and head (the pressure the pump must provide)—and on how efficiently it operates at that duty. A pump selected for the actual operating range is a sounder choice than one chosen simply because it has a high rated efficiency or ample capacity.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) advises selecting a pump that is efficient across the expected range of operating conditions, not just at one point. Its guidance also treats pump choice as part of a broader system decision involving controls, piping and valves, connected equipment, and operating conditions. DOE pump-selection guidance and its pumping-systems resources provide that system-level context.
Why there is no universal savings percentage
The energy effect varies with the existing pump, the system’s actual duty, control strategy, pressure losses, load changes, and operating schedule. Replacing a pump may have limited effect if excess energy use mainly comes from throttling, unnecessary pressure losses, or controls that do not follow demand. Conversely, a pump or control arrangement that better fits the operating conditions may improve performance. Without a defined system and measured baseline, a generic savings figure would not be reliable.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
DOE’s Better Plants page says pumps account for 27% of electricity used by industrial systems, citing its 2006 sourcebook. That is broad industrial context—not the share consumed by cooling pumps, the consumption of a particular facility, or a savings estimate for pump replacement. DOE Better Plants pump-systems guidance gives the statistic and its context.
What to compare when choosing a pump
Start with the cooling loop’s duty, then compare candidate pump and system arrangements under the conditions in which they will actually operate. Relevant considerations include:

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Required flow and head: Establish what the system needs at relevant operating conditions rather than relying only on a catalog rating.
- Efficiency across the operating range: Consider expected changes in demand, not just efficiency at a single design point.
- Controls and demand variation: Assess how the pump will respond as cooling requirements change. Variable-speed control can be appropriate in variable-flow applications, but its value depends on the installation.
- System resistance: Account for pressure losses through piping, valves, and connected equipment; changing the pump alone may not address the source of excess energy use.
- Configuration and practical constraints: Consider how many pumps operate, whether a parallel-pump strategy is suitable, fluid properties, materials compatibility, maintenance, reliability, space, and installation limits.
- Life-cycle cost: Include energy use over the expected operating schedule alongside installation and maintenance considerations.
DOE’s guidance does not identify one pump model or duty point as the right choice for every cooling system. The appropriate selection depends on the application data.
How to evaluate an existing cooling loop
- Measure representative operation. Gather flow, head, and motor input—power or current—under conditions that reflect how the system normally runs. DOE identifies these as core inputs for assessing a pumping system.
- Establish a baseline and system curve. Record the operating conditions and determine the system’s flow and head requirements. A measured baseline gives candidate changes something meaningful to be compared against.
- Define a plausible alternative. Specify the proposed pump, control approach, or other system change, and assess it against the same relevant conditions. Do not treat a higher nameplate efficiency as proof of savings.
- Use an assessment tool where useful. DOE describes the Pumping System Assessment Tool (PSAT), available through MEASUR, as a resource for assessing pumping-system energy and exploring improvement scenarios. It supports analysis; it does not prescribe a retrofit or guarantee a result. See DOE MEASUR and the DOE PSAT overview.
Consider the rest of the cooling system
Pump selection is one possible part of a broader efficiency effort. DOE process-cooling guidance discusses measures including variable flow, variable-speed drives for pumps and cooling-tower fans, temperature-setpoint resets, and waterside economizers. Which measures make sense depends on the system and its operating needs; the guidance does not establish a universal saving for each measure. See DOE process-cooling guidance.
