Not necessarily. Encoding prerecorded videos before streaming can shift work away from the computer that runs the broadcast, but it does not eliminate the need to send a continuous live signal to YouTube. Whether it lowers your total cost depends on what you pay for playback, encoding, equipment, electricity, storage, channel time, and audience delivery.
What pre-encoding changes—and what it does not
Pre-encoding means preparing video files before they are broadcast, rather than encoding the source footage as it plays. That can reduce repeated real-time encoding work on a creator’s computer. But an active 24/7 YouTube stream still needs an ongoing input signal: something must play the prepared videos and send them to YouTube.
YouTube also processes incoming live video for viewers. Its Help guidance says, “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” Pre-encoding your files does not remove that downstream work. Where the cost may move
The relevant comparison is not a one-time encoding run versus a 24/7 broadcast. Compare the complete cost of each workflow over the same duration, at the same output quality and with the same audience assumptions.

- Local computer: Pre-encoding may lower processing demand while streaming, but the computer or another device may still need to play the video and upload continuously. The sources provide no measured electricity or hardware savings for a particular PC.
- Dedicated hardware: YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus and says its PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. That demonstrates an automation option, not that buying the device saves money for your channel. YouTube’s encoder guide lists supported encoder options.
- Hosted streaming or encoding: Check what the provider bills for: active channel time, configured outputs, stored video, delivered video, bandwidth, or a subscription. Preparing source files in advance may not change charges based on active channel hours or audience delivery.
- Audience delivery: If a provider charges for delivered minutes or bandwidth, viewer distribution can matter more than the initial encoding step.
- Quality: Resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate can affect resource use and provider charges. Use YouTube’s recommended settings for your intended output when comparing workflows.

How to compare your own workflows
- Fix the scenario. Use the same stream duration, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and expected concurrent audience for each option.
- List every recurring charge. For cloud services, include storage, active-channel time, configured outputs, delivery, bandwidth, or subscription fees that apply. Check whether charges continue for the full stream duration.
- Count local operating costs. Include incremental electricity and equipment use, plus the cost of keeping a playback and upload device running and maintaining it.
- Separate preparation from broadcast. Record any one-time pre-encoding cost separately from recurring playback, live ingest, and viewer delivery costs.
- Compare the totals over a useful period. A setup that costs less for one day may not be cheaper over a month if it requires more operator time, power, or hosted channel hours.
There is no published general savings percentage for pre-encoding prerecorded videos for a 24/7 YouTube stream in the sources cited here. Your result depends on your provider’s billing units, stream settings, audience, and the local equipment you would otherwise run.
