You generally do not need to re-enable OEM unlocking after every reboot. On Android devices following the documented platform behavior, the Developer options toggle sets an unlock permission that persists across restarts. That permission is not the same as an unlocked bootloader, which requires a separate action.
What the OEM unlocking setting does
OEM unlocking in Developer options grants permission for a supported device to accept a later bootloader-unlock request. It does not unlock the bootloader by itself. Android’s platform documentation describes the toggle as setting get_unlock_ability to 1.
AOSP says this permission persists across reboots and factory data resets. Its bootloader documentation states, “After setting, this mode persists across reboots and factory data resets.” The statement concerns the permission set in Developer options, not an instruction to automate the toggle. Why enabling it is different from unlocking the bootloader
Unlocking the bootloader is a separate, consequential operation. AOSP describes fastboot flashing unlock as an unlock action; the documented process requires a user warning and a factory reset to protect data from unauthorized access. The unlocked state itself persists across reboots, but it is not the same setting as OEM unlocking permission.

Google warns that an unlocked device is less secure. Android Enterprise documentation also says factory reset protection is disabled when OEM unlocking is enabled in Developer options. If the OEM unlocking toggle appears to reset
The persistence behavior is Android platform guidance, not a guarantee that every manufacturer, carrier, model, or firmware build will behave identically. The official materials cited here do not establish a universal script or workaround for a toggle that disappears or switches off.

- Check the instructions from the manufacturer for your exact model, region, and firmware.
- Confirm that you are looking at the Developer options permission rather than the bootloader’s current locked or unlocked state.
- Do not use an automation script to force the setting based on a generic Android recipe; the available guidance does not support one.
Pixel and Nexus unlocking is a device-specific example
Google’s documented Pixel and Nexus flashing workflow includes enabling OEM unlocking and USB debugging, entering fastboot (including with adb reboot bootloader), and using the appropriate unlock command. Google warns that unlocking erases device data. These steps describe that device family’s workflow, not a universal procedure for Android phones. Before you unlock
- Back up data you cannot afford to lose; the unlock process may erase the device.
- Verify that your specific device and carrier or regional firmware support bootloader unlocking.
- Read the manufacturer’s instructions and understand the security change before issuing an unlock command.
