Yes. OBS Studio works on both Intel and Apple silicon MacBook Pro models. For the current release, OBS’s homepage listed version 32.2.2 and macOS 13 or newer when checked on October 7, 2026. Download the build for your Mac’s processor, grant the permissions OBS needs, and test your intended recording or stream: compatibility alone does not guarantee smooth performance.
Which MacBook Pro models and macOS versions work with OBS?
OBS supports Intel and Apple silicon Macs. Its homepage offers separate downloads for the two architectures, so choose the one that matches your Mac. To check the processor type, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac; the overview identifies an Intel processor or an Apple chip.
When checked on October 7, 2026, the OBS homepage showed version 32.2.2 and a macOS 13.0-or-newer requirement. OBS’s macOS versions table, dated July 29, 2026, listed version 32.2.1 for Intel and Apple silicon Macs running macOS 13 Ventura through macOS 26 Tahoe. Because the displayed release numbers differ, check the current download page and your exact macOS version before updating. The versions table marks releases for older macOS versions as no longer supported.

OBS’s general system requirements page lists macOS 11 or later, but that is not the minimum for the current release shown on its homepage. If your Mac cannot run macOS 13, do not assume an older OBS release is still supported.

How to install OBS on a MacBook Pro
- Open the official OBS download page and select the macOS build that matches your Mac’s processor.
- Open the downloaded DMG file. If it does not mount automatically, find it in Downloads and open it there.
- Drag OBS into the Applications folder, then launch it from Applications.
- Use OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard to get an initial setup for your computer and intended use, then test your sources and output before going live.

How to give OBS screen-recording and device permissions
In OBS, open the OBS Studio menu and choose Review App Permissions. Enable the access required for your sources and controls:

- Screen Recording: captures the desktop, windows, and apps.
- Camera: lets OBS use a webcam or camera connected through a capture device.
- Microphone: lets OBS capture microphone and audio-device input.
- Accessibility: allows keyboard shortcuts when OBS is not the foremost app.
If a capture source is blank, check Screen Recording or Camera access, depending on the source. If audio is missing, check Microphone access. If global shortcuts do not work while another app is active, check Accessibility access.

OBS’s hardware-encoding guidance distinguishes streaming from recording. Apple silicon Macs can use Apple VideoToolbox for H.264 streaming and for H.264, HEVC, or Apple ProRes recording. On Intel Macs, OBS says VideoToolbox streaming is unsupported because it lacks the constant-bitrate support required by most streaming services; OBS directs Intel users to x264 for streaming. Intel Macs can still use VideoToolbox for H.264 recording.

Set up VideoToolbox recording on an Intel Mac
- In OBS, switch to Advanced output mode.
- Open the Recording settings.
- Choose Apple VT H264 Hardware Encoder.
- Set a recording bitrate appropriate to your resolution and frame rate. OBS’s published examples for this recording guidance are:

These are OBS-published examples for Intel H.264 recording, not universal settings for every recording or streaming service.
Will OBS run smoothly on your MacBook Pro?
There is no single performance guarantee for every MacBook Pro generation or workload. OBS says CPU needs depend on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Its System Requirements page puts the distinction plainly: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.”

Start with the Auto Configuration Wizard, then test the actual scenes and sources you plan to use. If the result struggles, reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or reduce encoder load. Make changes and test again before a live broadcast; OBS’s basic hardware requirements do not establish how a specific MacBook Pro will perform at a particular quality setting.

No external microphone or capture device is required just to run OBS. Add hardware only if you need a particular input—for example, a microphone for voice or a capture device for an external camera or console. Check that the device works with your exact Mac and macOS version and has a suitable connection.

Certification indicates OBS testing and compatibility; it is not a claim about price, availability, or performance quality.
