Teams deepfake detection analyzes meeting audio or video, but the cited Microsoft documentation describes a detection report—not a recording made by the detection feature. Microsoft describes the detection path as a certified third-party provider or bot examining meeting media and sending a detection signal to Teams. Teams stores detection information on the participant and shares it through roster updates. That does not establish how a particular provider handles or retains the media it analyzes.
What does Teams deepfake detection do?
Microsoft describes synthetic-media detection as an integration with certified third-party detection providers. A provider analyzes meeting media for signs of synthetic or manipulated audio and video, then sends detection signals to Teams. Teams supplies the integration and in-meeting presentation of those signals; the documented detector is not described as a built-in Teams model independently recording the meeting.
The Microsoft Graph beta action reportSyntheticMedia provides a technical view of the workflow. Its documentation says the action is intended for certified third-party audio and video synthetic-media detection bots admitted to a meeting call. The bot evaluates a participant stream and reports a finding. Teams stores the detection information on that participant and distributes it through roster updates.

In practical terms, there are two different data activities: the provider’s analysis of meeting media and Teams’ handling of the resulting detection information. The latter is a signal or report associated with a participant, not a saved audio or video file according to the cited API and roadmap descriptions.

Does the detection feature record the meeting?
The cited Microsoft Graph documentation and Microsoft 365 Roadmap entry do not say that the detection workflow creates a meeting recording. They describe media analysis, a detection signal, and detection metadata stored in Teams. On that evidence, it is accurate to say that the documented detection feature analyzes media and reports a finding; it is not accurate to say the feature is documented as recording the meeting.
That boundary matters: the absence of a recording claim in those documents is not proof that every provider deletes all media immediately or never retains it. A provider could have separate data handling practices, and an organization could have other recording or compliance features enabled. To understand retention for a deployment, check the provider’s privacy documentation and the organization’s configuration rather than treating Teams’ storage of detection information as a complete account of the provider’s data handling.
Does Teams send meeting audio or video to a third party?
For the documented deepfake-detection path, a third-party provider analyzes meeting media. That means the provider must be able to process the relevant audio or video stream for its detection task. Microsoft’s roadmap says providers analyze meeting media for signs of synthetic or manipulated audio and video and send detection signals to Teams. The Graph action describes the bot reporting its finding, while Teams stores and distributes detection information.

The available Microsoft descriptions do not establish every provider’s exact data flow: for example, they do not state how long a provider retains media, whether it stores copies, or what other data it processes. Nor do they establish whether a particular organization’s tenant has enabled a detector. Those answers depend on the provider and deployment. Review the provider’s privacy notice and ask the administrator which bot or service is admitted and what retention terms apply.
How is this different from Teams’ own AI audio and video processing?
Teams also uses AI for meeting quality and effects, which is a separate function from synthetic-media detection. Microsoft’s Support article, “How Microsoft Teams uses AI to enhance audio and video in meetings,” describes local processing for tasks such as noise suppression, echo cancellation, and speech enhancement, as well as video effects. Transcription and captions are among the features used when activated by the user.
Microsoft says of the processing described on that support page: “Your meeting’s audio and video data never leave Teams and aren’t stored anywhere, by anyone – not even Microsoft.” Keep that statement within its stated scope: the listed Teams AI enhancements. It should not be extended to a separate third-party detector whose purpose is to analyze meeting media.

| Feature or path | Who processes the media | What the cited documentation says happens |
|---|---|---|
| Teams audio/video enhancements | Teams processes media locally for the listed enhancements | Microsoft says the audio and video data for these processes do not leave Teams or get stored |
| Synthetic-media detection | A certified third-party provider or admitted detection bot analyzes meeting media | The provider reports a detection signal; Teams stores detection information on the participant and distributes a roster update |
The distinction is about the service path and purpose, not simply whether a feature uses AI. Local enhancement and third-party detection are separate processes, so a privacy statement about one should not be assumed to describe the other.
What must be in place for the documented detection workflow?
The Graph beta API documentation identifies two requirements for a detection bot: it must be certified for the intended synthetic-media detection use and admitted to the call, and the tenant administrator must grant the Calls.ReportSyntheticMedia.All permission. The action is not described as something an ordinary participant switches on for themselves from a meeting control.
- Identify the provider. Ask the meeting or tenant administrator which third-party detection provider is being used. A Teams roster signal alone may not tell a participant the provider’s retention policy.
- Confirm deployment and admission. Verify that the organization has configured the provider and that its bot is admitted to the call. The API documentation makes bot admission part of the workflow.
- Check the permission grant. The tenant administrator should verify that the app has the documented
Calls.ReportSyntheticMedia.Allpermission. This is an administrator-level permission requirement, not a general Teams user setting. - Read the provider’s privacy terms. Confirm what audio/video and related information the provider processes, whether it stores or retains anything, and how long. Microsoft’s integration descriptions do not supply those provider-specific terms.
- Check the current rollout status. A roadmap target does not confirm that the feature is available in a given tenant. The roadmap status and tenant configuration both matter.
Is the feature available now?
Microsoft 365 Roadmap item RM573451 was published October 2, 2026, and last updated October 7, 2026. In that roadmap record, the feature was marked “In development,” with general availability targeted for November 2026. As of October 13, 2026, November is still a future target, not evidence that general availability has occurred.

Availability can also depend on tenant rollout and configuration. Before relying on detection in a particular meeting, an administrator should check the current roadmap record and confirm whether the relevant service is available and enabled in that tenant. A roadmap entry is a plan, not confirmation of release or activation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Teams sensitive-content detection the same as deepfake detection?
No. Teams’ sensitive-content detection concerns shared screen content, such as supported financial or identity numbers. It is not described as checking whether a face or voice is synthetic. Microsoft also documents limitations involving unsupported sharing modes, language, and motion, and says end-to-end encryption is unavailable in meetings using this sensitive-content feature.

Do recording controls or encryption settings answer the privacy question?
No single recording control answers what an independently integrated detector processes. Microsoft Teams Premium materials list controls over who may record, along with encryption and watermarking. These can matter for meeting recording and protection, but they do not establish a third-party provider’s media retention practices or replace reviewing that provider’s privacy terms.
Consider the questions separately: whether a participant or organization can record the meeting; whether a detection provider analyzes a stream; what detection information Teams stores; and what the provider retains. The sources describe the detection signal and Teams’ participant-level detection information, but they do not provide one universal retention policy for all providers.
What does the Sensity Marketplace listing establish?
Microsoft Marketplace lists Sensity Deepfake Detection as an example of real-time audio/video deepfake detection in Teams. The listing says an active Sensity account is required and that the app can send data over the Internet. This is useful evidence that a named third-party option is listed, but Marketplace presence alone does not establish Microsoft endorsement or that its terms are identical to the roadmap integration.
Anyone evaluating that app should read the developer’s privacy policy and confirm the organization’s configuration before use. The listing’s statement that data can be sent over the Internet is not, by itself, a complete description of what data is sent, where it goes, or how long it is retained.
What the documentation does not establish
- Provider-specific retention: The API and roadmap descriptions do not say how long a particular provider keeps analyzed media, or whether it keeps copies.
- Tenant status: The cited documentation does not show whether a specific organization has enabled a bot or whether it is admitted to a particular meeting.
- Universal availability: The October 7, 2026 roadmap status was “In development,” with November 2026 general availability targeted; it does not confirm a later release.
- Detection accuracy: The cited materials provide no validated accuracy percentage or guarantee that the feature will catch a particular deepfake. They do not support claims that detection prevents a stated share of fraud or impersonation attacks.
For an organization, the useful checks are therefore concrete: identify the provider, verify its data-handling terms, confirm the admin permission and bot admission, and check tenant availability. For a meeting participant, ask the organizer or administrator which detector is in use and where its privacy terms can be reviewed.
