Yes. Microsoft Edge handles several different kinds of information, but “collects everything” is not an accurate description. Microsoft documents separate flows for required and optional diagnostics, browsing activity used for personalization, data synchronized to a Microsoft account, search suggestions, and security features such as Password Monitor. Each flow has different purposes, controls, and retention rules.
What information does Edge handle?
The most important distinction is between data kept locally in the browser, data sent to Microsoft or another service, and data synchronized between your signed-in devices. Microsoft’s Edge privacy guidance and Privacy Statement describe these categories separately.

Required diagnostic data
Microsoft says Edge collects required diagnostic data so it can remain secure, receive updates, operate reliably, and support troubleshooting. Its examples include information about the device’s connectivity and configuration, software setup, and inventory. This is not the same flow as your browsing history: the listed purpose is maintaining the browser and its core services.
Microsoft also says aggregated diagnostic data from which personal identifiers have been removed can be stored for up to two years. That retention statement applies to this diagnostic category, not to every kind of Edge data. The same data cannot be viewed or deleted through the Microsoft privacy dashboard.

Optional diagnostics and Windows settings
Edge can receive additional diagnostic information when you permit it. Microsoft’s examples include how Edge features are used, page navigation, and website content. The control depends on the platform. On Windows 10 and later, relevant cases use Windows diagnostic settings; on other platforms, Microsoft provides a control in Edge settings.
There is a regional distinction for the European Economic Area. Microsoft says Edge diagnostic collection is separate from Windows diagnostic collection on Windows 10 version 22H2 and newer and Windows 11 version 23H2 and newer, effective March 6, 2024. That separation does not mean diagnostics disappear; it means the Edge and Windows controls are treated as separate collections in the specified versions and region.
Does Edge use browsing history for personalization?
It can, but Microsoft describes conditions that must be met. With permission, Edge browsing activity may be used to personalize Microsoft Edge, Bing, Shopping, Microsoft News/MSN, advertising, search results, recommendations, and other Microsoft experiences. The activity Microsoft lists can include browsing history, favorites, usage data, viewed web content, and device information.

Turn off browsing-activity personalization
- Open Edge and select Settings and more (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Settings.
- Open Privacy, search, and services, then select Privacy.
- Turn off the setting that allows Microsoft to save your browsing activity for personalization.
The exact wording can change with Edge updates, but the control is in this Privacy section according to Microsoft’s current support guidance.
Personalized ads are a separate switch
Microsoft’s support page on Edge browsing activity for personalized advertising and experiences directs account holders to the privacy dashboard’s See ads that interest you setting for personalized advertising. Turning off personalized ads does not, by itself, stop browsing activity from being used to personalize search results, news feeds, or other Microsoft experiences. If you want to stop the broader browsing-activity use, change the Edge Privacy setting as well.
What does Edge sync to a Microsoft account?
When you sign in to Edge and enable sync, Microsoft says you can synchronize favorites, browsing history, extensions and their associated data, settings, open tabs, autofill form entries, passwords, and payment information. Sync is category-based: you can choose which types are enabled rather than accepting every category automatically.
Passwords, autofill entries, and payment information are especially sensitive. Review the selected categories on every account and device, particularly on a shared computer. Sync is also different from local storage: if a category is enabled, the purpose is to make that data available across your signed-in Edge installations.

Limit or disable sync
- In Edge, open Settings and more and choose Settings.
- Select your profile or Profiles, then open Sync.
- Turn off individual categories you do not want synchronized, or disable sync entirely.
If you delete synced browser data while sync is active, Microsoft says the deletion propagates to the signed-in devices using that sync data. Check that behavior before deleting something you may still need on another device.
Search queries, suggestions, and the default provider
Edge’s Search and site suggestions feature can send your search queries, standard device data, and location to the default search provider when the feature is enabled. That transmission supplies real-time suggestions and results. It is a different flow from Edge’s optional diagnostics and from account sync: the receiving party is the selected search provider, and the feature can be changed independently.
Microsoft also describes collection of web-search activity to improve Microsoft services when the relevant setting is enabled. Therefore, changing the search provider does not automatically change every Microsoft search-improvement or personalization setting. Review the search and privacy controls separately.

How Password Monitor handles saved credentials
If you enable Password Monitor, Microsoft says saved credentials are hashed and encrypted before being sent to its Password Monitor service for a breach check. Microsoft says it does not retain the data after that check is complete. This process is intended to check whether a credential appears in known breach information; it is separate from syncing passwords for autofill.

Does Edge track your browsing history?
There are several meanings of “track.” Edge normally keeps a local browsing-history record so you can revisit pages and use browser features. If you enable sync, that history can be synchronized to your Microsoft account and other signed-in devices. If you allow browsing-activity personalization and meet Microsoft’s eligibility conditions, Microsoft says selected activity can be sent over HTTPS and retained for up to 180 days for personalization.
Those are different operations. Local history is browser storage; sync copies selected categories to your account; personalization is a separate permitted use for Microsoft experiences. Clearing one does not necessarily clear the others.

Clear local browsing data
- Open Settings and more > Settings.
- Choose Privacy, search, and services.
- Under the browsing-data section, select the option to clear browsing data.
- Choose the time range and categories, then confirm the deletion.
Local clearing removes data from that Edge installation according to the categories you select. It does not automatically mean that account-associated or provider-held data has been removed.

Clear history associated with your Microsoft account
Signed-in users can use Microsoft’s Browsing history on the privacy dashboard page to view and clear browsing history associated with the account. If the history is synchronized, Microsoft says deleting it while sync is enabled deletes it across signed-in devices.

Understand what the dashboard cannot show
Microsoft says aggregated diagnostic data with personal identifiers removed is not available to view or delete through the privacy dashboard. Diagnostic controls and account browsing-history controls are therefore not interchangeable.
Does InPrivate stop all data collection?
No. Microsoft says browsing information is not sent while browsing in InPrivate or as a Guest, and data from those modes does not sync to the Microsoft account. Those protections address the browsing-history and synchronization behavior Microsoft specifies.
However, Microsoft’s documentation also says the optional diagnostic-data toggle applies to InPrivate and Guest. Site operators, network administrators, internet providers, and other services can have their own logging practices that Edge’s private mode does not control. The accurate conclusion is that InPrivate and Guest prevent the documented browsing information from being sent or synchronized in those modes; they are not an all-purpose guarantee that no data is handled anywhere.

A practical privacy checklist
- Open Edge’s Privacy settings and turn off saving browsing activity for personalization if you do not want that use.
- Check the Microsoft account privacy dashboard separately; disabling personalized ads does not disable search or news personalization.
- Review Edge sync categories and disable history, passwords, autofill, payment information, or other categories you do not need across devices.
- Review Windows diagnostic settings on Windows, or Edge’s diagnostic control on other platforms, if you do not want optional diagnostics.
- Decide whether Search and site suggestions should send queries, device data, or location to your chosen search provider.
- Clear local browsing data and account-associated history through their respective controls when you need both removed.
- Use InPrivate or Guest for a session you do not want added to Edge history or synchronized, while remembering that these modes do not govern every external logging practice.

Microsoft’s labels and settings can change as Edge and Windows are updated. For the current wording and platform-specific behavior, consult Microsoft’s Edge privacy documentation, the Microsoft Privacy Statement, and the relevant support pages before changing settings on managed or shared devices.
