Usually, no—not by a predictable or meaningful amount. OBS bitrate chiefly controls how much data your stream sends and how that picture looks; it is not an established way to reduce a PC’s electricity bill. To find your actual cost, measure the computer’s average power draw at the wall while it is streaming, then calculate its energy use and apply your local electricity rate.

What bitrate changes—and what it does not establish

Output bitrate sets the stream’s data rate. Lowering it can ease upload-bandwidth demands, but it also reduces the data available to represent the image and can make the stream look worse. OBS’s x264 guidance describes bitrate as a bandwidth-versus-quality trade-off and discusses encoder presets as a separate way to affect CPU use. Neither that guidance nor the other sources here establishes a predictable electricity saving from lowering bitrate.

This is a conclusion from published technical guidance, not a controlled power test. No cited source gives a wattage comparison for the same PC streaming at different bitrates. A particular system could draw slightly more or less after a change, but without measuring that PC at the wall, a lower electricity bill cannot be promised.

How to estimate the cost of running the PC 24/7

Measure representative power draw

  1. Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor or watt meter to measure the PC’s draw at the wall.
  2. Run OBS with the scenes, sources, encoder settings, and other activity you actually use for the stream. Measure over a representative period; a longer interval helps smooth out changes in scene complexity and system activity.
  3. If comparing bitrates or other settings, change one setting at a time and keep the stream workload as similar as possible. Compare the measured average draw rather than assuming that lower CPU or GPU utilization necessarily means lower wall power.

Convert watts to energy and cost

Use this calculation:

Average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours running = kWh

For an always-on 30-day month, the estimate is average watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 30. Multiply the resulting kWh by your local electricity price per kWh to estimate the energy charge. Your actual bill can differ because rates, taxes, billing periods, and the PC’s draw vary.

Published work has reported measuring average energy consumption and processor use, but it does not supply a universal wattage or a bitrate-specific savings figure. There is no supported universal monthly saving to apply to this calculation.

Which OBS settings are more directly tied to workload?

Output resolution and frame rate

OBS identifies resolution and frame rate as workload levers. Reducing output resolution can reduce GPU resource use and encoder load. Frame rate affects rendering and encoding: OBS states, “Frame rate also impacts both rendering and encoding performance.” Its example is to drop from 60 fps to 30 fps if 60 fps is not working. These changes may affect resource use, but they do not guarantee lower whole-PC electricity consumption; measure the wall draw if cost is the goal.

Encoder and preset

x264 uses the CPU. NVIDIA describes NVENC as a dedicated hardware encoding section on supported GPUs. Encoder choice and preset can change where encoding work happens and how much CPU it uses, but the cited guidance does not establish that one encoder or preset uses less total system power on every PC. A GPU encoder is not, by itself, proof of a lower electricity bill.

Scenes, sources, and competing GPU work

OBS troubleshooting guidance points to GPU contention, complex scenes, media and browser sources, and filters as possible contributors to performance load. For an unattended 24/7 stream, these parts of the workload may be more useful to inspect than bitrate alone. CPU/GPU utilization is informative, but it is not a substitute for measuring the complete system at the wall.

Choose bitrate for picture quality and a stable connection

YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its guidance accessed in 2026 lists these examples:

Output AV1/H.265 recommendation H.264 recommendation
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates, not electricity thresholds or guarantees of picture quality for every kind of content. OBS advises lowering bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the configured rate; dynamic bitrate can also reduce quality. Lowering the rate too far may make the image look worse, especially when there is more motion or detail. Match bitrate to the chosen codec, output, content, and available upload connection rather than treating it as a power-saving control. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance and OBS’s x264 streaming guide.

Troubleshoot the goal you actually have

  • The upload connection cannot hold the stream: Lower bitrate enough to fit the available connection and check OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting steps. Expect a possible quality trade-off.
  • OBS struggles to render or encode: Check OBS’s encoding performance guidance. Consider resolution, frame rate, encoder and preset, GPU contention, and scene/source complexity; change one factor at a time.
  • The electricity bill is the concern: Measure average wall power during representative streaming conditions and calculate kWh. Do not infer a cost reduction from bitrate or utilization alone.
