It can matter—but not equally for every developer or every task. In a DEV Community essay, Nikhil Singh argues that current AI coding output is already useful enough that further model improvements may make little difference to his own results. That is a personal judgment, not proof that model progress has stopped mattering.
What Singh means by “it does not matter”
Singh’s point is about diminishing returns in his own coding workflow: once a model produces code that is useful enough, a more capable model may not change what he can accomplish very much. He puts it informally: “It does not matter if the model gets better they are already generating pretty decent code.” The essay is attributed to Singh on DEV Community; the available listing reports “Sep 21” but does not establish a year.
That distinction matters. “Good enough for my work” is not the same as “further progress has no value.” Better models could still help with difficult tasks, reduce mistakes, or make work faster. Singh himself identifies possible gains in vulnerability discovery, design, speed, and resource use, without providing measurements to quantify them.
Why the answer varies by task
Model progress is not a single score that translates into the same benefit for every developer. A more useful way to judge it is to ask what changes in the work at hand:

- Output quality: Does the model handle the specific language, codebase, and requirements better?
- Reliability: Does it make fewer consequential errors, or does the developer still need the same testing and review?
- Speed: Does it reduce the time to a working result after accounting for corrections?
- Resource use: Can the task be completed with less compute, time, or other resources?
- Work beyond code: Does the project depend on hardware, cloud infrastructure, IoT, embedded systems, or other external constraints?
If a model’s output already fits a developer’s routine needs, improvements that do not alter those outcomes may have little practical value to that person. For more demanding work, even a modest improvement in reliability or capability could matter. The essay does not compare models or measure these effects, so it cannot establish how large the gains are.
What Singh says about using AI to code
Keep a person responsible for the result
Singh describes moving from keeping AI in the autocomplete loop to keeping a human in the loop while using autocomplete. He also says he removed VS Code from his setup. Those are details of his own workflow, not evidence that other developers should use the same tools or abandon the same editor.

The broader practical implication is to treat generated code as work that still needs engineering judgment. A developer must decide whether it meets the requirements, behaves safely, and fits the surrounding system.
Testing may become more important, not less
Singh predicts that test-driven development could become more common as AI makes large code changes easier. That is a forecast, not an established trend in the essay. The underlying concern is straightforward: generating more code quickly does not by itself show that the code works. Tests and review provide ways to check behavior rather than relying on the apparent plausibility of a generated answer.

Fundamentals still matter
Singh expects computer-science fundamentals and human judgment to retain value. His argument is consistent with the need to understand and evaluate code even when a model can draft it: producing a plausible implementation and knowing whether it is correct are different tasks.
Which predictions remain uncertain
Beyond his personal workflow, Singh makes several predictions. The essay does not provide labor-market data, comparative benchmarks, or other evidence that would verify them, so they should be read as possibilities rather than settled outcomes.

- Software feature development: He expects products without substantial hardware, infrastructure, cloud-provider dependencies, IoT, or embedded systems to plateau in feature development, while seeing more opportunity in specialized areas such as geospatial engineering, IoT, biotech, and embedded systems.
- Jobs: He suggests entry-level roles may shrink and specialized software-development roles may face pressure. He also speculates about work involving GEO/AEO, cybersecurity, model poisoning, guardrail maintenance, training datasets, AI infrastructure, and harness engineering.
- Open-weight models: He predicts they may eventually outperform current frontier models on benchmarks. The essay supplies no benchmark results or timeline that establishes this.
- Interfaces: He anticipates interfaces that combine graphical and voice interaction; this, too, is a forecast.
So, will better AI models change software development?
They may change it, but whether that change is meaningful depends on the task and on what improves. Singh’s headline is persuasive as a description of one developer’s sense that current coding assistance is already sufficient for his needs. It is too broad as a general rule: the essay also allows for gains in security, design, speed, and resource use, and offers no measurements showing that those gains are irrelevant across software development.
For an individual developer, the useful question is not simply whether the next model is better. It is whether it improves the quality or speed of work that matters, reduces the effort required to verify results, or makes previously impractical tasks feasible. Regardless of model capability, generated code still calls for human oversight and appropriate testing.
