No, not as part of a normal macOS upgrade—but the outcome depends on the action you choose. Apple says reinstalling macOS from Recovery does not remove apps or personal data. Erasing a disk in Disk Utility is a separate, destructive action. Back up your Mac first, and pause if an installer prompt proposes erasing a disk or volume you did not mean to erase.
What happens with each macOS installation option?
| Action | What it means for your data |
|---|---|
| Upgrade to macOS Mojave | An upgrade is not the same as erasing the Mac. Apple recommends backing up before installing software, but the available guidance does not guarantee that every file, setting, or third-party app will be unaffected in every situation. Apple’s macOS update guidance |
| Reinstall macOS from Recovery | Apple states: “Reinstalling macOS doesn’t remove your apps or personal data, but it’s still a good idea to make a backup first.” This assurance applies to the Recovery reinstall procedure described by Apple. Apple’s Recovery reinstall instructions |
| Erase a disk or volume in Disk Utility | This is a separate, destructive action—not a routine part of upgrading or reinstalling. Apple describes erasing the startup disk as a troubleshooting step if the installer cannot see the disk. Do not proceed unless you intentionally want to erase the selected storage. Back up before you install
Apple recommends making a backup before installing macOS and says to back up before a Recovery reinstall if possible. A backup gives you a way to recover files if something goes wrong or you choose an erase option by mistake.
Time Machine commonly backs up to an external storage device connected to the Mac. Apple says the storage device is sold separately; its guidance does not prescribe a particular model or capacity. See Apple’s list of backup disks you can use with Time Machine if you need to choose a destination.
How to avoid erasing the wrong disk
- Confirm your goal. Decide whether you are upgrading, reinstalling macOS from Recovery, or deliberately erasing the Mac. These are different procedures.
- Make and verify a backup. Use Time Machine or another backup method before starting.
- Read every installer prompt. If you see an option to erase a disk or volume, or are asked to choose a destination, stop and confirm that the selected disk and action match your intention.
- Do not erase as a precaution. Apple’s Recovery guidance treats Disk Utility erasure as a separate troubleshooting action, not a normal requirement for reinstalling macOS.
Check whether your Mac can run Mojave
Mojave is an older macOS release. Apple’s technical specifications list these compatible Mac families: MacBook models from Early 2015; MacBook Air and MacBook Pro from Mid 2012; Mac mini and iMac from Late 2012; iMac Pro (2017); and Mac Pro (Late 2013), plus Mid 2010 and Mid 2012 Mac Pro models with recommended Metal-capable graphics cards. Check your exact model and whether the software is available for it before following older installation instructions. Apple’s macOS Mojave technical specifications
