Yes. Home Assistant runs on hardware in your home, so local automations and devices can keep working when your internet connection fails—as long as the Home Assistant host, home network, and devices still have power and the devices communicate locally. Cloud-dependent devices and services may stop working. Home Assistant’s FAQ recommends choosing devices that work locally for the most reliable operation during an internet outage.

What keeps working during an internet outage?

Home Assistant can continue running automations on its local host and communicating with devices over your home network or a local radio connection. The internet is not required for Home Assistant’s core local operation, and a Home Assistant Cloud subscription is not required to keep the local controller running. Home Assistant describes itself as cloud-independent in its glossary.

Whether a particular light, sensor, lock, or other device remains available depends on how its Home Assistant integration communicates. Local communication can continue without the manufacturer’s cloud; an integration that relies on that cloud generally cannot reach the device through its normal route during an outage.

Devices using local connections

Home Assistant identifies Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and ESPHome as local protocols that do not need internet access. A local connection gives Home Assistant a path to the device without sending commands through a vendor’s cloud.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Still, a protocol or brand name alone does not guarantee that every feature works offline. Check the documentation for the exact model and its Home Assistant integration to confirm whether control is local and which capabilities are supported.

Cloud-dependent devices and services

If a device integration communicates through the manufacturer’s cloud, an internet outage can interrupt commands, state updates, or both. The same applies to services that rely on an external cloud. Home Assistant may continue running, but it cannot make an unavailable cloud service reachable.

What stops working, and what does not?

Feature or connection During a home internet outage
Local Home Assistant automations Can continue if the Home Assistant host, home network, and required devices are operating locally.
Locally connected devices Can remain controllable; behavior depends on the specific device and integration.
Manufacturer-cloud-only devices May be unavailable through their cloud-dependent integration.
Home Assistant access from the home network Can work if the local network and route to the Home Assistant instance remain available.
Access from outside the home Generally unavailable because the remote method needs connectivity to the home instance.
Cloud-linked voice and integrations May be unavailable. Home Assistant lists Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa integrations among features that need internet.
Updates and app-store access Need an internet connection.

This comparison concerns loss of the internet connection only. A power failure, a failed Home Assistant host, or a broken home network is a separate problem and can interrupt local operation as well.

Can you control Home Assistant at home during the outage?

Usually, if your phone or computer can still reach the Home Assistant instance over the home network. Home Assistant listens on the local network by default, according to its remote-access documentation. An internet outage does not by itself disable that local route, but a home-network problem can.

When internet service is available, Home Assistant documents several ways to enable remote access:

Do you need Home Assistant Cloud to use Home Assistant offline?

No. Home Assistant Cloud is optional for local operation. Its benefits include convenient remote access and selected cloud-linked integrations and voice features; it is not what keeps the local controller alive. Without internet, those cloud-dependent benefits are unavailable, while local operation can continue.

Can voice control work without internet?

Yes, with a local voice pipeline. Home Assistant’s guide to setting up a fully local voice assistant calls for listening hardware, integrated local speech-to-text and text-to-speech services, and Home Assistant Operating System. This setup processes voice locally rather than relying on cloud processing. Home Assistant also offers a cloud voice pipeline; its guide explains that audio is sent to Nabu Casa servers for processing: setting up a voice assistant with Home Assistant Cloud.

What hardware do you need for local control?

You need an always-on device to run Home Assistant, but there is no single mandatory product. Home Assistant Green is a ready-to-use host with Home Assistant preinstalled. A Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC, or virtual machine may also suit a setup; the right choice depends on the hardware you already have and how you plan to connect devices. See the official installation options and FAQ.

A radio accessory is needed only if your chosen devices require a protocol your host cannot provide. Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 is an optional accessory for Zigbee, Thread, and Matter connectivity, not a requirement for every installation. The Connect ZBT-2 page describes its supported uses.

How to check whether your setup will survive an outage

  1. Check each device’s Home Assistant integration. Look for whether it communicates locally or requires the manufacturer’s cloud, and verify the exact model’s supported features.
  2. Identify the local network path. Confirm that Home Assistant and the device can communicate over your home network or the required local radio.
  3. Review automations for cloud dependencies. An automation can run locally while still failing to get a trigger or perform an action that depends on an unavailable cloud service.
  4. Separate internet resilience from hardware resilience. An internet outage is not the same as loss of power, a host failure, or a local network outage.

Home Assistant’s Works with Home Assistant program highlights devices tested for local control. Check the specific model and integration rather than assuming every device from a listed brand behaves the same way.
