Yes, H.265 can reduce a nonstop stream’s upload demand and data use, but it does not automatically reduce every cost. YouTube’s recommended contribution bitrates are lower for H.265/AV1 than for H.264 at several matched resolutions and frame rates. Whether that saves money depends mainly on your internet plan, acceptable picture quality, encoder and power costs, and ingest protocol. YouTube’s published guidance does not establish a codec-specific live ingest fee.
What changes when you choose H.265 instead of H.264?
The codec affects how much data your encoder sends to YouTube for a given resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s live encoder guide publishes lower recommended rates for its combined H.265/AV1 category than for H.264 at the settings below. Lower bitrate means less sustained upload capacity is needed and, over a 24/7 stream, less data is transmitted—if the selected rate delivers acceptable quality for your video.
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that H.265 will look identical to H.264 at the lower rate. The H.265/AV1 column groups the two codecs; it is not a standalone H.265 efficiency test. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide notes that lower-end suggested HEVC rates can save bandwidth, particularly for 4K, but you should validate image quality with your content and encoder.

|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p30 (4K) | 42 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 50 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
YouTube recommends constant bitrate, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Its encoder settings guide lists supported codecs and settings. The streaming tips say total outgoing bitrate must fit available upload bandwidth and recommend leaving 20% headroom.

How much data can a 24/7 stream use?
At a constant bitrate, estimate decimal megabytes as bitrate in megabits per second × seconds streamed ÷ 8. For the monthly estimates below, the calculation uses a continuous 30-day month (2,592,000 seconds) and excludes audio, protocol overhead, downtime, and bitrate variation. The bitrate inputs are YouTube’s recommendations above; the monthly totals are calculations, not figures published by YouTube.
| Resolution and frame rate | Codec guidance | Bitrate | Estimated data per 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | H.264 | 14 Mbps | About 4.54 TB |
| 1080p30 | H.265/AV1 | 10 Mbps | About 3.24 TB |
| 1080p60 | H.264 | 17 Mbps | About 5.51 TB |
| 1080p60 | H.265/AV1 | 12 Mbps | About 3.89 TB |
| 1440p30 | H.264 | 21 Mbps | About 6.80 TB |
| 1440p30 | H.265/AV1 | 15 Mbps | About 4.86 TB |
| 1440p60 | H.264 | 34 Mbps | About 11.02 TB |
| 1440p60 | H.265/AV1 | 24 Mbps | About 7.78 TB |
| 4K30 | H.264 | 42 Mbps | About 13.61 TB |
| 4K30 | H.265/AV1 | 30 Mbps | About 9.72 TB |
| 4K60 | H.264 | 50 Mbps | About 16.20 TB |
| 4K60 | H.265/AV1 | 35 Mbps | About 11.34 TB |
For example, the recommended 1080p60 H.265/AV1 rate corresponds to about 3.89 TB in 30 days, compared with about 5.51 TB at the H.264 rate. At 4K60, the corresponding estimates are about 11.34 TB and 16.20 TB. Your ISP may measure or bill data differently, and a fixed-price unlimited plan may have no direct per-terabyte saving.

Which parts of the bill can actually change?
YouTube ingest and processing
YouTube says it automatically transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. Its encoder settings documentation does not state a live ingest price or a codec-specific fee. The cost of YouTube Live ingest is therefore not established by that guidance; do not assume either a free or a paid codec-dependent rate.
Internet service and data allowance
A lower contribution bitrate can reduce upload demand and transmitted volume. It can matter if your connection is near its sustained upload limit or your ISP charges by usage or imposes a data cap. The dollar value depends on your location and tariff. Keep the recommended 20% upload headroom in mind when checking whether a connection can sustain the stream.

Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
Encoder hardware and electricity
A local PC, camera, or hardware encoder brings its own purchase or rental and electricity costs. The available figures do not establish power consumption or local electricity tariffs, so a codec choice alone cannot produce a reliable cost estimate. Hardware implementation and encoding workload also matter; check the actual device’s specifications and measure its draw in your own setup if power cost is material.
Separately billed cloud encoding
Cloud encoding is a different cost category from sending a creator’s encoder feed directly to YouTube Live. Google Cloud Live Stream API charges for live encoding and streaming, with prices that vary by codec, configuration, and tier. Use its current pricing table for an estimate; its rates are not YouTube Live ingest prices.

Check protocol and HDR support before switching
Codec support depends on the ingest protocol and your encoder, so do not infer that every combination works just because YouTube lists a codec generally. YouTube’s protocol comparison lists H.264 for RTMP and H.264 plus H.265/HEVC for HLS, and describes HLS as better suited to 4K because of HEVC support. Verify your specific encoder’s protocol, codec, resolution, and frame-rate support before changing the setup.
If your workflow is HDR live streaming, codec choice is a requirement as well as a cost question: YouTube’s HDR guidance says live HDR is currently supported only with H.265/HEVC and calls for HLS output in the described configuration. Confirm the current requirements for your encoder and workflow before going live.

How to decide which codec costs less in your setup
- Confirm compatibility. Check YouTube’s protocol comparison and the encoder’s specifications for the codec, ingest protocol, resolution, and frame rate you intend to use.
- Choose a target quality. Start with YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the selected codec and video settings. Test representative footage; do not assume a lower rate will preserve the same quality for every scene.
- Check the connection. Compare the total outgoing bitrate with sustained upload capacity and retain the 20% headroom YouTube recommends.
- Calculate data on the right billing basis. Estimate volume for the hours you will actually stream, then compare it with your ISP’s cap or usage charges. A lower data estimate does not guarantee a lower bill.
- Include equipment and service costs. Account for encoder hardware and electricity where relevant. If a cloud encoding platform is involved, price that service separately from YouTube Live.
- Run a quality and stability check. Confirm the stream is acceptable and stable with the chosen codec and bitrate before relying on it continuously.
Keeping a YouTube stream online around the clock
For a do-it-yourself setup, a compatible encoder sends the video to YouTube using its configured ingest protocol. The encoder, network connection, and power source must remain available for a nonstop stream; use YouTube’s bitrate guidance, keyframe interval, and upload headroom, and monitor the stream for interruptions. Codec choice can reduce the outgoing data rate, but it does not remove the need for a running encoder or stable connection.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, with no computer or home connection that has to stay on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card; it is one free day per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
