That does not mean every Google location control is off: Gemini Apps Activity, device permissions, Maps Timeline, and Gemini in Maps Navigation are separate. The right setting depends on which feature you use and what you want to prevent.
What “Gemini Maps” location tracking means
There is no single “Gemini Maps” tracking switch. Gemini may use location context to answer a prompt such as “Where is the closest coffee shop to me?” Google says it can use a general area based on your IP address or the Home or Work addresses in your Google Account by default. If you grant permission, Gemini may process precise device or browser location for a more accurate answer. It may also receive precise location from another Google service, such as Google Maps, even if precise location access for the Google app is off. Google’s Gemini location guidance explains these sources of location context.
Using location to answer a request is different from saving a location history. The answer depends on whether you mean Gemini’s place search and directions, Gemini in Maps Navigation, Gemini Apps Activity, or Maps Timeline.
How the features and controls differ

What Gemini Apps Activity retains
When Keep Activity is enabled, Gemini may save signed-in conversations and associated information to your Google Account. Google says precise location processed with your permission from a device or browser is not stored in Gemini Apps Activity; instead, processed location is coarsened before storage. Google describes a “general area” as larger than 3 square kilometers and having at least 1,000 users. That is Google’s description of its processing approach, not an independently measured privacy guarantee.

This distinction does not remove location from the conversation itself. If your prompt names a place, or Gemini’s reply names one, that text can remain part of the chat. A coarsened location attached to activity and a place written in chat content are different kinds of information.
How to review the relevant settings
Check Gemini’s location permission
On the Gemini web app, Google says to check the location indicator in the menu. On mobile, review the device’s app permissions for Gemini. The exact screen and labels can vary by platform, account type, region, and rollout; Google’s location help covers web, Android, iOS, Watch, Chrome, and Google Built-In surfaces.

Review or turn off Gemini Apps Activity
- Open Gemini Apps Activity in My Activity while signed in.
- Review or delete saved Gemini activity, or turn off Keep Activity using the controls shown for your account.
- If you use a work or school account and cannot change a setting, your administrator may control it.
Turning off Keep Activity or deleting Gemini Apps Activity does not delete data saved in other Google services. Google also says activity previously reviewed by service providers may be retained for up to three years, disconnected from your account.
Review Maps Timeline separately
Open the Timeline controls in Google Maps and check whether Timeline is enabled. If it is, manage or delete Timeline data there. Turning off Gemini Keep Activity does not turn off Timeline, and changing Timeline does not by itself change Gemini activity or device permissions.

Check Maps and Search privacy settings
Google says its Maps privacy-settings update is rolling out gradually, so the controls you see may differ. Check the settings displayed in your Maps account. Where the newer controls are not available or do not match the documentation, Web & App Activity remains the relevant control for Search history and personalized recommendations described by Google.

Which setting should you change?
- You want Gemini to stop using device location: review or revoke Gemini’s location permission in your device settings. This does not necessarily prevent Gemini from using a general area or location received from another Google service.
- You want Gemini chats and associated activity not saved to your account: turn off Keep Activity or delete Gemini Apps Activity in My Activity. This does not erase data in other Google services or remove a location written into chat content from other retained copies.
- You want to prevent precise location history in Maps Timeline: check and turn off Timeline separately in Maps. Gemini activity settings do not control it.
- You are concerned about Gemini in Navigation: treat it as a distinct Maps feature and review the Maps privacy controls available on your account; do not assume the location-history statement for Gemini place search and directions applies to Navigation.
