No. You can set up Google Fitbit Air, sync it with the Google Health app, and review basic tracked data without paying for a subscription. Google Health Premium is optional; it adds Google Health Coach and other advanced features. Fitbit Air includes a three-month Premium trial, but the tracker does not stop working when the trial ends.
Can you use Fitbit Air without Premium?
Yes. Google describes Fitbit Air as working with the Google Health app to record health metrics and sync them over Bluetooth. You need a compatible smartphone and Google account for setup and pairing, but a paid Premium plan is not required for basic use. Because Fitbit Air has no screen, you use the app to set it up and view your metrics. Google’s Fitbit Air setup guide explains the app connection, while the Google Store product FAQ lists phone requirements.
What Fitbit Air features work without a subscription?
Google’s support documentation lists these baseline metrics and functions in the Google Health app:
- Daily steps and distance
- Calories burned and cardio load
- Sleep stages
- Automatic recognition and recording of many activities
- Workout review, exercise tagging, and workout-duration adjustments
- Exercise mode with real-time heart-rate-zone data
The support page also describes sleep SpO2 estimates and irregular-heart-rhythm notifications as device and app capabilities. Availability of some advanced features depends on region, so check whether a particular feature is offered where you live; the documentation does not establish that every feature has the same availability or subscription requirement in every market. These are wellness features, not a substitute for medical advice or diagnosis. Irregular-heart-rhythm notifications are not available everywhere or intended for all populations. Google’s help page provides the feature and availability qualifications.

What does Google Health Premium add?
The clearest subscription distinction is coaching: Google says Google Health Coach requires Google Health Premium. Its help page describes personalized guidance, fitness plans, sleep insights, and support based on Fitbit Air data. Google also says some advanced health-tracking features require Premium; it does not publish a complete country-by-country list of which features are paid versus included. Some features require Premium, the app, and an internet connection. Google’s Google Health announcement and support documentation describe these limits.
What happens after the three-month free trial?
Google announced that Fitbit Air purchasers receive three months of Google Health Premium at no charge. After the trial, basic tracking and metric review remain available; you do not need Premium simply to keep using the tracker. Continuing to use Premium features such as Health Coach requires a paid plan. Google listed plans starting at $9.99 per month or $99 per year in its May 7, 2026 announcement. Those are the announced starting prices, not a guarantee of current pricing in every country; confirm the local price and trial renewal terms before enrolling. Google’s May 7, 2026 announcement gives the trial and plan details.

It can suit you if you mainly want basic activity, sleep, and workout data in the companion app and do not need personalized coaching. Premium matters if you want Health Coach’s plans and guidance or other features Google marks as advanced and subscription-based. Before buying, check that your phone meets Google’s minimum requirements and that any advanced feature you particularly want is available in your country. Treat the included trial as temporary and check its renewal details and local price before it starts.
