FaceTime isn’t available in Dubai. Apple’s carrier-support page for the United Arab Emirates states plainly: “FaceTime isn’t available in the United Arab Emirates.” Since Dubai is in the UAE, plan on video calls going through a different app. The UAE’s telecom regulator, TDRA, regulates voice and video calling over the internet, so the apps that work are the ones it permits. A travel eSIM can give you mobile data, but neither Apple nor TDRA says it brings FaceTime back.
What Apple says about FaceTime in the UAE
Apple’s support page “Wireless carrier support and features for iPhone in the Middle East and India,” in its United Arab Emirates section (published February 5, 2026), is the clearest official statement on this. It says FaceTime isn’t available in the UAE, with no exception for Dubai or for particular carriers.

The same page lists UAE carrier capabilities such as 5G, eSIM, LTE and VoLTE. Those are mobile network features. Seeing them listed does not mean FaceTime is included, and it does not mean any internet calling service is. Apple’s page does not describe an iPhone setting that changes this, so don’t count on a toggle to fix it.

Apple also notes that FaceTime may be unavailable on a device that originates from the UAE and is later unlocked or used elsewhere. The page does not provide a matrix covering device model, Apple Account country or SIM status. If your situation depends on one of those details, check Apple’s current device-specific support before you travel.

What TDRA’s rules mean for video calls
TDRA’s Internet Guidelines page (last updated October 3, 2026) states: “Voice and video calls are considered Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services that are a regulated activity in the UAE.” According to the page, access to VoIP services serving UAE users is allowed when the services are provided in collaboration with licensed providers or approved by TDRA. It also says licensed providers are obliged to block non-compliant VoIP application traffic.
Neither Apple’s page nor TDRA’s guidance ties FaceTime’s absence to a specific TDRA decision, so the cause should be treated as unconfirmed. The practical rule is clear, though: a calling app is a safe choice when it appears on TDRA’s list of currently allowed applications, or is otherwise provided with a licensed provider. Because the list can change, check TDRA’s page on your travel dates rather than relying on an older screenshot.

Calling and meeting apps on TDRA’s allowed list
TDRA’s list of currently allowed applications includes the services below. They fall into two groups: work meetings and collaboration, and consumer calling.

| Service | Typical use | TDRA label |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Teams | Work meetings and collaboration | Listed; no label stated |

| Cisco Webex | Work meetings | Listed; no label stated |
| Skype for Business | Work communication | Listed; no label stated |
| Avaya Spaces | Work collaboration | Listed; no label stated |
| Slack | Work collaboration | Listed; no label stated |
| BOTIM | Consumer calling | Listed; no label stated |
| GoChat | Consumer calling | Listed; no label stated |
| Voico | Consumer calling | Listed; no label stated |
Inclusion on the list is the only thing TDRA’s page establishes for these services. It does not cover pricing, account requirements, feature parity, or whether a contact in another country can join. Confirm those details with each app’s provider. Where the table says “no label stated,” TDRA’s page gives no further restriction, so don’t assume one. The one exception is Google Meet, which TDRA labels as meeting-only.

Does a travel eSIM change anything?
Apple’s “All New Features in iOS 26” describes streamlined travel eSIM management and says people can use iMessage and FaceTime on their home number while away without additional cost. That is a general travel feature. It is not a UAE-specific promise, and it sits alongside Apple’s explicit statement that FaceTime isn’t available in the UAE.
An eSIM supplies mobile data, which the apps on TDRA’s list can use. Before buying one, confirm UAE coverage with the provider. Neither a travel eSIM nor a particular Wi-Fi network is established as making FaceTime work in the UAE, and online claims that an eSIM unlocks FaceTime there are not backed by Apple or TDRA.

What to do before and during a Dubai trip
- Plan without FaceTime. Don’t schedule FaceTime calls with family, friends or clients who will be in Dubai.
- Choose an app from TDRA’s list that fits the call. Use Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Cisco Webex or Google Meet (meetings only) for work, and BOTIM, GoChat or Voico for personal calls, based on which app your contacts already have.
- Ask the other person to install the app and sign in before you leave. Make one test call from your phone on the network you’ll actually use.
- Confirm your data arrangement. Ask your carrier or eSIM provider whether UAE coverage and data are included in your plan, and at what cost.
- Recheck TDRA’s list of allowed applications and Apple’s UAE carrier page on the day you travel, since both can change.
Carry this checklist into Dubai with your phone set up before you land, so you’re not troubleshooting a call during a meeting.
