No. Facebook does not currently notify a post owner when someone screenshots a normal post. The same no-alert behavior is documented for ordinary photos, profiles, Reels and Stories. The important exception is a disappearing message in an end-to-end encrypted Messenger chat: Meta says Messenger can notify participants when it detects a screenshot of that message.
The short answer
At the time of writing (September 2026), taking a screenshot of a regular Facebook post does not send an alert to the person who published it. There is no banner, push notification or activity entry telling the owner that you captured the post.
This applies to the usual Facebook content people ask about: feed posts, photos, profile pages, Reels and Stories. Meta’s documented exception concerns Messenger’s disappearing messages, not ordinary Facebook posts.
What happens for each type of Facebook content?

“No” means Facebook does not document an alert for that content type under the current behavior. It does not mean a screenshot cannot be saved, copied or redistributed. Once an image is visible on a screen, the recipient can also photograph the screen with another device, which an app may not be able to detect.

On January 27, 2022, Messenger Product Manager Timothy Buck announced: “now we’re introducing a new notification when we detect that someone screenshots a disappearing message.” Meta described this as the same feature offered in Messenger’s vanish mode.

The distinction is the message mode, not simply the app. A normal Messenger chat does not become screenshot-alerting merely because it is end-to-end encrypted. The alert is associated with content configured to disappear, and Meta phrases the behavior as occurring when it detects a screenshot. Detection is therefore a condition of the feature rather than a promise that every possible copy method will be identified.
What the alert tells participants
When Messenger detects the capture, participants in the relevant disappearing-message conversation can see an in-chat notice. It is designed to indicate that a disappearing item was screenshotted; it is not a Facebook feed notification to a post owner.
Why ordinary chats are different
Standard Messenger messages remain available in the conversation unless someone deletes them or the chat uses another retention setting. Meta’s announced screenshot notice was scoped to disappearing messages, so applying the rule to every Messenger conversation is inaccurate.
Does Facebook notify Story owners?
No screenshot alert is currently documented for Facebook Stories. The Story author can see the normal viewer information that Facebook provides, but taking a screenshot is not listed as a separate viewer event. This is different from services that have experimented with screenshot indicators; behavior on one social network should not be assumed to apply to Facebook.
Stories can still be saved or shared by viewers. A lack of notification is not a privacy guarantee, and changing a Story’s audience after publication cannot retract copies already made.

Does Facebook notify someone about a screenshot of a photo, profile or Reel?
No. Current guidance groups ordinary photos, profile pages and Reels with normal posts: the owner is not sent a screenshot notification. The same answer applies whether you capture the entire screen or use the operating system’s built-in screenshot shortcut to capture part of the page.
Facebook may record other events, such as a reaction, comment, share or Story view. Those events should not be confused with screenshot detection. A screenshot itself is not shown as an interaction in the post’s activity list.
Could the behavior change?
Yes. Meta can alter privacy features through app updates, server-side changes and staged rollouts. The no-alert answer describes the documented behavior available at the time of this article, not a permanent technical guarantee. Messenger’s disappearing-message notice is also detection-based, so its wording and presentation can change.
If your interface differs, first update Facebook or Messenger from the official app store, then reopen the conversation or content. Check whether the chat is using disappearing messages or vanish mode before drawing a conclusion. Do not infer a new policy from a single warning on one device; Meta sometimes tests features with only part of its user base.
Privacy and etiquette when saving a screenshot
Ask before sharing sensitive material
Even when no alert is generated, the content may contain someone’s name, face, location, contact details or private conversation. Obtain permission before reposting it, and crop or redact information that is not necessary for your purpose.

Remember that “no alert” is not “no consequence”
A screenshot can be forwarded, backed up or indexed elsewhere. A post owner may learn about it from another person, from a later repost or from a visible watermark even though Facebook did not send a technical notification.

Content shared with a restricted audience should not automatically be treated as public. Copyright, confidentiality, employment rules and local privacy laws can apply independently of Facebook’s interface behavior. The notification setting does not grant permission to copy or publish someone else’s work.
How to capture a page for your own records
If your goal is documentation rather than monitoring another person, use the screenshot tools built into your device or browser. On a computer, open the post, expand the part you need, and use the operating system’s region or full-screen capture command. On a phone or tablet, use its hardware-button screenshot shortcut, then review the image for private information before storing it.
For a long public page, a browser’s print dialog can create a PDF, although dynamic feeds, login walls and lazy-loaded media may not appear exactly as they do on screen. Take a second capture after the page finishes loading, and keep the original URL and capture date with the file so you can explain what was recorded.

Common misunderstandings and troubleshooting
“I saw a warning, so Facebook must notify for every screenshot.”
Check what was captured. A warning is most likely related to a disappearing Messenger message, not a feed post, Story or ordinary chat. Confirm that the conversation is using disappearing content.
“The owner did not react, so the screenshot was invisible.”
Facebook may not send an alert, but the owner can still discover a copy through another person or a repost. Technical silence does not prove that nobody else saw the image.

There is no established Facebook setting that lets a user enable screenshot notifications for normal posts. Apps claiming to add that capability may request account credentials or excessive permissions; avoid entering your Facebook password into an untrusted tool.
“A screenshot of a disappearing message always triggers an alert.”
Meta’s wording is conditional: Messenger notifies when it detects a screenshot. Alternate capture methods, unsupported clients, offline states or later software changes may affect detection. Treat disappearing mode as a warning that captures can be reported, not as a guarantee that every copy method is blocked.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I disable the Messenger screenshot notice for disappearing messages?
Meta has not documented a user switch that disables the detection notice while keeping disappearing messages enabled. You can use a standard chat instead, but that changes the message mode and retention behavior.
Will deleting a Facebook post delete screenshots people already made?
No. Deleting or editing the original changes Facebook’s copy; it cannot remove screenshots saved to another person’s device or backups.
Does a screenshot notification reveal exactly what was captured?
The documented Messenger notice indicates that a disappearing message was detected as screenshotted. It does not provide a forensic record of every image, camera photo or copy made outside the app.
