Yes—usually. EF Core generally opens a database connection for an operation and closes it when the operation finishes. The underlying database driver—not EF Core—manages the connection pool and may reuse a released connection for later work. An EF Core open/close event therefore does not necessarily mean a new physical connection was created and destroyed.
How connection reuse works
A DbContext represents a unit of work, but its lifetime does not mean a database connection stays open for that whole period. EF Core generally opens a connection just before a database operation, such as a query, and closes it afterward. That makes the connection available to the driver’s pool for possible reuse. Microsoft describes this behavior in its EF Core performance documentation.
The distinction is between EF Core’s logical open and close requests and the driver’s management of physical connections. A log may show an open and close around each operation even when the driver serves those operations from a pool. Pooling is usually enabled by default, according to Microsoft, but the exact behavior depends on the provider, driver, connection settings, and runtime conditions. Reuse of a particular physical connection is not guaranteed.
Does EF Core open a new connection for every query?
Not necessarily. EF Core may request that a connection be opened for each operation, but that request is not proof that the driver creates a new physical connection each time. When pooling is active and a suitable connection is available, the driver can reuse one. If pooling is disabled or a connection is unavailable or unsuitable, behavior can differ.

Connection-pooling configuration belongs to the database driver. For ADO.NET drivers, pool settings commonly include minimum and maximum pool sizes in the connection string, but names, defaults, and supported options are provider-specific. Check the documentation for the exact driver and version used by the application before changing settings.
Connection pooling is not DbContext pooling

| Feature | What it reuses | Who manages it | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|---|
| Connection pooling | Database connections | The underlying database driver | It does not guarantee that every operation gets the same physical connection. |
| DbContext pooling | DbContext instances |
EF Core, when configured | It does not itself enable or manage database connection pooling. |
An application can use driver-managed connection pooling with ordinary or pooled contexts. AddDbContextPool is for reusing context instances; it is not the setting that makes SQL connections get reused.
Should you keep the connection open?
Usually, no. EF Core’s general approach—open just before an operation and close afterward—avoids keeping a connection out of the pool longer than necessary. A long-lived open connection can reduce the connections available for other work. Keep a connection open only when a specific requirement, such as an explicit transaction, calls for it; follow the provider’s guidance and assess the application’s actual workload rather than treating a permanently open connection as a general performance fix.

What to do if your code opens a connection manually
If application code manually opens a DbConnection or changes other ADO.NET connection state, the application is responsible for restoring that state when it is done. Close the connection when appropriate and ensure the code handles exceptions as well as the normal path.
This matters especially with pooled contexts. EF Core resets context state it knows about, but it generally does not reset arbitrary state changed directly on the underlying driver. Leaving a connection open or otherwise altered can affect later work that receives the same pooled context or connection resources.

How to inspect connection lifecycle events
For relational providers, EF Core’s IDbConnectionInterceptor can observe connection creation, opening, closing, and failures. See Microsoft’s interceptors documentation for the available interception points. Interceptors can also alter or suppress operations; if you only need visibility, use logging or diagnostic facilities rather than an interceptor that changes behavior.
Use lifecycle logs to understand when EF Core asks for connections to be opened or closed. Those events alone do not establish whether the driver created a new physical connection or reused one; consult the provider’s diagnostics when you need to investigate pool behavior.

Keep DbContext concurrency rules separate
EF Core does not support running parallel operations on the same DbContext instance. Await one operation before starting another on that context, or use separate context instances for parallel work. This is a context-safety rule, independent of whether the database driver reuses connections. Microsoft documents the rule in its DbContext configuration guidance.
