No. Ctrl+S is not the standard Windows shortcut for taking a screenshot. In Snipping Tool, it saves a snip that is already open. To capture your screen, use Windows+Shift+S for a selected area, Print Screen for a full-screen image copied to the clipboard, or Windows+PrtScn to save the full screen in PicturesScreenshots. Microsoft documents these behaviors for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its Snipping Tool guide and Windows keyboard-shortcut reference.
What Ctrl+S actually does
Ctrl+S is a save command. When a screenshot is open in Snipping Tool, pressing it opens the save workflow so you can store the current snip. It does not begin a new capture by itself.
That distinction matters because Windows separates capturing, copying and saving:
- Capture: Windows creates an image of all or part of the display.
- Clipboard: The image is held temporarily so you can paste it into Paint, a document, chat or another application.
- Save: Snipping Tool writes the open image to a file, normally after you choose a name and location.
Therefore, pressing Ctrl+S before you have a snip open will not take a screenshot. Start a capture first, then use the save command if you want a file.

How to screenshot part of the screen
- Press Windows+Shift+S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool capture bar appears.
- Choose the capture mode shown on the bar, such as a rectangular selection, and drag over the area you need. Depending on the available modes, you can also select a window or the full screen.
- Release the mouse button. Windows copies the image to the clipboard and normally shows a notification.
- Paste with Ctrl+V into Paint, a document, email or another image-capable application.
- If you need to crop, annotate or save the snip, select the notification to open it in Snipping Tool. Press Ctrl+S there, choose the filename and location, and confirm the save.
This workflow explains why people sometimes think Ctrl+S is a screenshot shortcut: it is the final step in a Snipping Tool session, not the capture trigger.
How to capture the entire screen
Copy the full screen to the clipboard
Press Print Screen (also labeled PrtSc or PrtScn on some keyboards). Windows captures the entire display and places the image on the clipboard. Open the destination application and press Ctrl+V. If you need a file, paste it into Paint or Snipping Tool and save it from there.

Save the full screen directly to a file
Press Windows+PrtScn. The screen may briefly dim to indicate success. Windows saves the image in the PicturesScreenshots subfolder of your user profile. Open File Explorer and select Pictures, then Screenshots to find it.

Capture versus save: the practical rule
Use a capture shortcut when you need a new image. Use Ctrl+S only after Snipping Tool has an image open and you want to save that image. A typical editing workflow is:
- Capture with Windows+Shift+S.
- Open the notification to inspect or annotate the snip.
- Press Ctrl+S.
- Choose a filename and destination, then confirm.
If you do not need editing, Windows+PrtScn is faster because it creates the file immediately. If you are sending the image straight into another program, Print Screen avoids creating a file first.

Why a shortcut may behave differently
Microsoft notes that shortcut behavior can vary by application or by Windows settings. In particular, Windows can assign the Print Screen key to open screen snipping instead of performing the traditional full-screen clipboard capture. If pressing Print Screen opens an overlay, check the Windows keyboard or accessibility settings and use the behavior shown there. The Windows+Shift+S and Windows+PrtScn workflows remain the direct choices when you want selection or a saved full-screen file.
Troubleshooting screenshot shortcuts
Ctrl+S does nothing
Make sure a snip is open in Snipping Tool. Ctrl+S saves the current image; it does not launch a capture. Start with Windows+Shift+S, select an area, open the resulting snip and try again.

That shortcut initially copies the capture to the clipboard. Paste it into Paint or another application, or select the notification to open Snipping Tool and save with Ctrl+S. It is not the same as Windows+PrtScn, which writes directly to PicturesScreenshots.

Print Screen opened snipping instead of copying the full screen
Print Screen can be assigned to screen snipping in Windows settings, and application or edition settings can change the result. Use Windows+PrtScn for a direct file or Windows+Shift+S for a controlled selection. Microsoft lists the relevant behavior in its accessibility shortcut documentation.
You pasted an old image
The clipboard changes only when a new capture succeeds. Repeat the capture, wait for the notification or screen dim, and paste again. For a persistent result that does not depend on clipboard contents, use Windows+PrtScn.
You need to save a capture under a different name
Open the snip in Snipping Tool and press Ctrl+S. The save dialog lets you select the filename and destination rather than relying on the default screenshot folder.
