Compact OS does not universally make Windows slower or faster. It stores Windows system files in compressed form, so Windows reads fewer bytes from storage but uses processor time to decompress them. The result depends on your storage speed, processor, and workload. On a storage-bound PC, less disk I/O may help; on another system, the decompression work may outweigh that benefit.
What Compact OS changes
Compact OS lets Windows run from compressed operating-system files. Windows Update can replace or remove individual files as needed to help maintain the reduced footprint. The feature changes how Windows stores and reads those files; it does not remove the need for space for apps, personal files, servicing, restore points, logs, caches, or system files related to memory.
Microsoft’s sizing guidance says 8 GB drives are not large enough for the scenarios it describes. Compact OS should therefore be treated as a way to reduce the Windows footprint, not as a substitute for adequate storage capacity.
How the compression affects performance
When Windows reads a compressed system file, it has fewer bytes to fetch from storage but must decompress the data using the CPU. Whether that exchange helps depends on which part of the system is limiting the task. Microsoft’s Windows IoT Enterprise guidance says relatively new devices should not see much performance downside, especially with an SSD; that is qualified guidance for that product context, not a measured guarantee for every Windows PC. Microsoft recommends measuring the scenarios that matter.

- Storage-bound work: Reducing the amount of data read may help when storage is the bottleneck and the processor can decompress the files without becoming a new bottleneck.
- CPU-bound work: Decompression adds processor work, which may offset the reduction in storage reads.
- Mixed workloads: Booting, launching applications, and other tasks can involve different balances of storage and CPU activity, so a result for one task does not establish the result for all use.
How much storage Compact OS can save
Microsoft published example footprint figures for Windows 10 version 1607 on specific configurations. They are historical examples, not benchmarks or savings guarantees for a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.

The figures in the final column combine Compact OS with single-instancing, another space-saving technique; they should not be attributed to Compact OS alone. Microsoft’s same version 1607 table also listed separate examples without Compact OS: turning off the hibernation file yielded 10.87 GB on the x86 configuration and 13.48 GB on the x64 configuration, while a reduced hibernation file yielded 11.27 GB and 14.15 GB, respectively. These are also dated examples, not current recommendations or performance results. Microsoft’s Compact OS and reserved storage guidance provides the underlying context.

How to decide on your PC
There is no fixed current savings figure or universal performance benchmark established for Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices. To decide whether Compact OS is worthwhile on your machine, compare it enabled and disabled while keeping the hardware and workload the same.
- Note available disk space and the Windows footprint.
- Compare boot and shutdown time.
- Compare launch times for the applications you actually use.
- Measure disk I/O throughput and CPU use during disk reads.
- Account for the storage device and processor, since they influence whether reduced I/O can offset decompression work.
Microsoft identifies the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit assessment and performance toolkits, as well as DiskSpd, as resources for performance measurement in its Windows IoT Enterprise Compact OS guidance. Measurements on your own workloads are more useful than assuming an SSD or a particular processor guarantees a specific outcome.

Check, enable, or disable Compact OS
Use an elevated Command Prompt. Microsoft’s Compact command reference applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
- Check the current state by running
Compact.exe /CompactOS:query. - To enable Compact OS, run
Compact.exe /CompactOS:always. - To disable it, run
Compact.exe /CompactOS:never.
After changing the setting, repeat the same measurements under the workloads you care about. A storage-space reduction by itself does not show whether the change improved or hurt performance.
