Does Claude Code resend the whole conversation every time you send a message, and are you charged for it again? Anthropic’s documentation does not establish that the entire raw session is retransmitted and billed as ordinary, uncached input on every turn. Claude Code can continue or resume a conversation, while API prompt caching can reuse matching prompt prefixes. Context continuity and how tokens are priced are separate questions.
What “resending the session” means for context and billing
Claude Code’s CLI reference documents continuing and resuming conversations, as well as a default system-prompt snapshot behavior that reuses a recorded prompt where applicable. That describes how a session can retain context; it does not show that all historical text is sent again in the same form, or that every token is charged at the standard uncached input rate on every turn.
For API usage, charges are based on token consumption. Anthropic’s prompt-caching documentation explains that matching prompt prefixes can be reused. A cache hit changes how matching input is processed and priced; it does not prove that contextual content is absent from a request.

API billing
If Claude Code is using API access, token usage is billed at rates for the active model and relevant token category. Ordinary input, cache writes, and cache hits have separate rates, and rates vary by model. Check the current Anthropic pricing page for the model and rates that apply to your usage rather than relying on a single general savings estimate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Pro or Max subscription
Claude Pro and Max subscription usage is included in the subscription rather than billed as a per-turn API charge. Claude Code’s session cost figure is therefore not a direct API bill for these subscribers. Check plan usage information to understand subscription consumption.
How to check whether prompt caching is helping
- Check the session’s cache statistics. In Claude Code, run
/usage. Anthropic says the prompt-cache summary is available in Claude Code v2.1.251 or later. It can report request count, the share of input tokens served from cache, cache misses, and whether the cache is warm. - Interpret the figures as diagnostics. A higher share of input tokens served from cache indicates more cached input for the displayed usage. Misses mean input was not served from cache. Neither figure alone gives your total savings: the relevant model’s cache-write, cache-hit, and ordinary input rates also matter.
- Confirm API charges in the Console. The dollar amount shown in
/usageis a local estimate based on token counts and list prices unless configured model pricing applies. Anthropic says, “The figure is an estimate, so for authoritative billing see the Usage page in the Claude Console.” Check the Claude Console Usage page for authoritative API billing.
Anthropic’s cost guide shows an illustrative /usage example of “14 requests · 91% of input tokens from cache.” Those are sample interface values, not a benchmark or expected result for your sessions.

How prompt caching works—and what the trade-off is
Prompt caching looks for a match against a prompt prefix up to a cache breakpoint. If the prefix matches, it can be reused; if it does not, the system processes the prompt and caches the prefix as the response begins. Anthropic describes automatic caching for growing multi-turn histories, which moves the breakpoint as the conversation grows, and explicit cache breakpoints for more control. As Anthropic puts it, “Prompt caching optimizes your API usage by allowing resuming from specific prefixes in your prompts.”

The documented default cache lifetime is five minutes. An optional one-hour cache duration is available at additional cost. Whether a longer lifetime is worthwhile depends on the timing of your requests and the applicable cache-write and cache-hit rates. Compare those rates for your active model and your observed cache mix; there is no single savings percentage that applies across models and workloads.

Reduce costs using your actual workload
- Measure before estimating. Use
/usageto see cache behavior and the Console Usage page to confirm API charges. For subscription use, monitor plan usage rather than interpreting the session estimate as a direct bill. - Account for workload shape. Anthropic says costs vary with model, codebase size, and patterns such as multiple Claude Code instances or automation. Track those factors when comparing usage periods.
- Evaluate cache timing and mix. Compare cache writes, cache hits, ordinary input, cache lifetime, and request timing using the current rates for your model.
- Run a representative pilot for a team. Anthropic recommends measuring a pilot group rather than projecting enterprise averages onto every individual user.
Anthropic’s cost documentation reports an enterprise deployment average of around $13 per developer per active day and $150–250 per developer per month, with costs below $30 per active day for 90% of users. These are Anthropic-published estimates for enterprise deployments, not an individual forecast; the page says costs vary widely by model, codebase, and usage. The figures are on Anthropic’s current cost documentation accessed in 2026, which does not show a publication year.
