Microsoft documents Outlook calendar times as stored in UTC and says classic Outlook uses Windows regional settings for how calendar times appear. Microsoft’s Clock app guidance, however, does not explicitly guarantee what happens to a saved alarm when you switch formats, so verify an important alarm after changing the setting.
What changes when you switch between 12-hour and 24-hour time?
The Windows clock-format setting controls presentation: whether hours appear with AM/PM markers or on a 00–23 scale. Microsoft’s instructions change the regional time format, not the system date, time, or time zone. See Microsoft’s Switch Calendar views between a 12-hour clock and 24-hour clock guidance.
For Outlook calendar events, Microsoft says start and end times are saved in UTC. A change to the display format alone does not reschedule an event; the time may simply be shown in a different format. A time-zone change is a separate matter and can change the local time displayed for an event.
Will changing the format change alarms in the Windows Clock app?
The setting is intended to change how time appears, not to reschedule alarms. But Microsoft’s instructions for alarms in the Windows Clock app do not explicitly state whether changing 12/24-hour format preserves each saved alarm’s underlying time. If an alarm is important, check its displayed time after changing formats rather than assuming a documented guarantee.

Microsoft says alarms and timers can work while the Clock app is closed or the device is locked, but notifications require the device to be awake. Keep a laptop or tablet plugged in and its volume high enough to hear the alarm. If Windows warns that a notification will appear only while the device is awake, adjust its sleep settings. How do you change the Windows clock format?
For Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft’s Outlook instructions use Control Panel. Category wording can vary slightly by Windows version.

- Open Control Panel, then select Clock and Region or Clock, Language, and Region.
- Select Change date, time, or number formats.
- On the Formats tab, set the short and long time formats. Choose HH:mm and HH:mm:ss for 24-hour time, or h:mm:tt and h:mm:ss:tt for 12-hour time.
- Apply the changes. Check the clock and any important alarms or calendar entries you use.
These are display-format choices. To change the Windows time zone, date, or system time instead, use Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Microsoft documents those controls separately in Set time, date, and time zone settings in Windows.

- Classic Outlook for Windows: Calendar time appearance follows the computer’s country or region settings. Changing Windows’ regional time format can therefore change how calendar times are displayed.

If the time itself appears wrong, check the event’s scheduled time and the time zone as well as the format. Outlook’s time-zone settings are separate; Microsoft explains them, and UTC storage for calendar start and end times, in Manage time zone settings in Outlook.

A 12/24-hour display switch changes the notation—for example, whether the hour uses AM/PM—not the time zone. If an event appears at a different hour after travel or a time-zone adjustment, review the Windows and Outlook time-zone settings and the event details. If only the notation changed, the event’s scheduled time has not thereby been moved.
