Sometimes—it depends on what your phone means by “unknown.” Phone by Google explicitly blocks private or unidentified caller IDs when you enable Block unknown. Apple’s iPhone guidance describes silencing calls from numbers not saved in your contacts, but does not explicitly promise that it catches every hidden or private caller ID. Samsung Galaxy phones offer controls for unknown or hidden numbers, though labels and availability vary by device.
“Unknown” can mean two different things
A phone may treat “unknown” as a visible phone number that is not in your contacts, or as a caller whose number is withheld or otherwise unidentified. Those are not interchangeable: a setting that handles unsaved numbers may not necessarily block private caller IDs.
Also check what the setting does. A call can be screened, silenced and sent to voicemail, filtered, or blocked outright. The label alone does not establish which behavior you will get.

What each phone’s setting does
| Phone or app | What “unknown” covers | What happens to the call |
|---|---|---|
| Phone by Google | Private or unidentified caller IDs. Visible numbers not saved in contacts are not blocked by this control. | Calls from private or unidentified numbers are blocked. Google says blocked calls do not appear in call history. |
| iPhone | Apple describes unknown callers in its guidance as numbers not saved in contacts; its cited guidance does not explicitly state that every hidden caller ID is covered. | With the Silence option, calls from unsaved numbers are silenced, sent to voicemail, and shown in Recents. |
| Samsung Galaxy | Samsung documents controls for unknown, private, or hidden numbers. | Blocking options are available in the Phone app’s call settings; exact labels and availability vary by model, software version, and carrier. |
How to check or block hidden callers
- Identify your calling app and phone. Check whether you use Phone by Google, Samsung Phone, or Apple’s Phone app, and note your phone model.
- Look for a setting that names hidden caller IDs. In Phone by Google, open Phone > More > Settings > Blocked numbers, then turn on Unknown. Google says this blocks private or unidentified numbers while allowing visible numbers that are not in contacts. On Galaxy phones, look in the Phone app’s call settings for wording such as Block unknown/hidden numbers or Block calls from unknown numbers. For iPhone, Apple’s documented Silence option handles unsaved numbers; do not assume from that label alone that all withheld caller IDs are covered.
- Verify the setting on your own device. Check the blocked-call list and, if appropriate, confirm how the phone handles a hidden call. The support pages describe intended settings behavior, not test results for every device or carrier.
If hidden calls still get through
- Check that you enabled a control specifically for private, hidden, or unidentified callers rather than one that only silences numbers missing from contacts.
- On Samsung Galaxy, menu names and options can differ by model, software version, and carrier. Samsung’s [call-settings guidance](https://www.samsung.com/ca/support/mobile-devices/manage-call-settings-on-your-galaxy-phone/) describes that variation.
- If the option is missing or does not behave as expected, ask your phone manufacturer or carrier about your exact model, region, software, and service configuration. The cited guidance does not establish a universal carrier-level rule.
