If by “HomePad” you mean Apple’s HomePod speaker, you can use it without owning an iPhone—but you need an iPhone or compatible iPad to set it up initially. Apple says a Mac cannot complete HomePod setup. After setup, supported Siri features and AirPlay playback can work without keeping that setup device beside the speaker.
Can you set up HomePod without an iPhone?
Yes, if you have a compatible iPad. Apple’s setup instructions say, “You’ll need an iPhone or iPad to set up HomePod. You can’t set up HomePod with a Mac.” The product is called HomePod; Apple’s official instructions cited here do not establish a product named “HomePad.”
Before setup, update the iPhone or iPad to the latest iOS or iPadOS available for that device, connect it to the Wi-Fi network you intend to use for HomePod, and hold it near the speaker. HomePod uses that Wi-Fi network, and its initial setup copies settings such as Wi-Fi, Siri preferences, and Apple Account information from the device.
Which iPads are compatible?
Apple’s HomePod mini specifications list supported devices including iPad Pro, iPad (5th generation or later), iPad Air 2 or later, and iPad mini 4 or later, running the applicable latest operating system. The same page lists iPhone SE, iPhone 6s or later, and iPod touch (7th generation). Check Apple’s current HomePod mini technical specifications for the model and software requirements that apply to your speaker; the listed compatibility is specific to that product page.

If you have only a Mac or Android device
Apple’s setup instructions do not provide a Mac or Android setup route. If you have no compatible iPhone or iPad, the supported practical option is to borrow one for initial setup. You do not need to buy an iPhone solely to keep using HomePod after setup.
What works after setup without an iPhone?
HomePod can respond to supported Siri requests over Wi-Fi, including playing music or podcasts and handling everyday questions and tasks. Available services and features depend on service support, account configuration, and—in some cases—a subscription. Apple notes that not all music services are supported. You can also send audio to HomePod using AirPlay from compatible Apple devices. Apple lists iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, and Mac as HomePod mini audio sources. A Mac can therefore be useful for playback after setup, but it does not replace the iPhone or iPad required for first-time setup. HomePod mini has touch controls for play or pause, skipping tracks, invoking Siri, and adjusting volume. These provide basic control at the speaker, but they do not mean every setting or media-management task is available without the Home app.

Using a third-party music service
Direct Siri playback from a third-party service depends on that service being supported and added to HomePod. Apple’s instructions use the service’s app and the Home app on an iPhone or iPad to configure it. If a service is not connected for direct Siri playback, audio may instead be sent with AirPlay from a compatible device; do not assume every streaming app can be controlled directly by HomePod.

Personal requests and multiple users
Voice recognition and personal requests require household members to configure the feature using their own iPhone or iPad and Apple Account. Personal requests can include sending or reading messages, checking calendars, and making calls. Apple’s current HomePod support guide, for software version 27 or later, supports voice recognition for up to six users in a shared home. See Apple’s guide to recognizing your voice on HomePod.

That requirement is about personalization, not ordinary guest use. Guests or other household members can still ask Siri for general help such as playing music, setting timers or alarms, and getting information like weather or news.
Smart-home accessories and remote features
Smart-home requirements depend on the accessory and what you want it to do. Apple’s Works with Apple Home guidance distinguishes pairing and local control from hub-enabled features such as automations, notifications, and remote access. For some non-Thread accessories, the guidance calls for an iPhone on iOS 18 or later or an iPad on iPadOS 18 or later for pairing and local control, or a compatible HomePod or Apple TV home hub for those hub-enabled features. Thread accessories require a compatible Thread-enabled Apple Home hub. Check the specific accessory’s requirements rather than assuming HomePod alone replaces an iPhone or iPad for every setup task.
