Plaque is a film of bacteria on teeth, but toothpaste labeled “antibacterial” is not a substitute for brushing it away. For most people, the practical approach is to brush all tooth surfaces twice a day for about two minutes with fluoride toothpaste, then clean between teeth. Fluoride helps protect against tooth decay; it is not a promise to sterilize the mouth.
What toothpaste can—and cannot—do about plaque
Plaque is a bacterial film that can contribute to gum disease and tooth decay. Brushing disrupts and removes it; toothpaste supports cleaning. Fluoride has a separate, established role: it strengthens and remineralizes enamel and can inhibit bacterial metabolism, helping prevent cavities. That does not mean fluoride toothpaste removes every bacterium or makes the mouth sterile. The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste.
The word “antibacterial” on a label alone does not show that a toothpaste removes more plaque than another product. The available guidance does not establish that one current toothpaste formula is superior to others in a head-to-head comparison.

- Brush twice daily for about two minutes: last thing before bed and at another time. Use fluoride toothpaste.
- Clean all tooth surfaces rather than concentrating only on the front teeth. Take enough time to reach the gumline and the backs of the teeth.
- Use a manual or powered toothbrush. Either can work when used appropriately; some people find a powered brush easier to use thoroughly.
The NHS provides guidance on brushing and keeping teeth clean. The ADA says two minutes has been shown to achieve clinically significant plaque removal.

Clean between teeth, too
Brushing does not replace cleaning between teeth. The ADA says floss or interdental brushes used alongside brushing may reduce plaque or gingivitis more than brushing alone; interdental brushes may be more effective than floss. The right choice depends on fit and individual needs, so ask a dental professional for advice if you are unsure which tool suits you.
How to choose a toothpaste
- Start with fluoride. Look for a fluoride toothpaste and, if you want an independently reviewed product claim, check whether the product has an ADA Seal for the claim you need.
- Match any added claim to your concern. Toothpastes can address sensitivity, gingivitis, tartar build-up, enamel erosion, whitening or breath. A claim about one of these concerns does not establish that the product is best for everyone.
- Consider whether you will use it consistently. A comfortable brush and a toothpaste you can use as directed support a thorough daily routine; neither replaces brushing technique or cleaning between teeth.
One relevant example is Parodontax Daily Fluoride Anticavity and Antigingivitis Toothpaste. The ADA listing says its Council on Scientific Affairs acceptance is based on safety and demonstrated efficacy in helping prevent tooth decay, gingivitis and plaque above the gumline when used as directed. That acceptance is not a head-to-head result or proof that it is the best choice for every person.

Triclosan toothpaste should not be treated as a current U.S. shopping option: the ADA says it was no longer commercially available in the United States as of 2019. The ADA explains toothpaste ingredients and product claims.
Toothpaste amounts for children
Use age-appropriate amounts and supervise young children while they brush. The ADA recommends no more than a rice-grain smear for children younger than 3 and no more than a pea-sized amount for ages 3 through 6. See the ADA’s fluoride guidance for children.
