Google does not confirm that Motion Assist works in every app. Its official guidance describes bubbles overlaid near the edges of the screen, but provides neither an all-app guarantee nor an app-by-app compatibility list. Motion Assist also depends on Android 17 or later and updated Google Play services, and its automatic vehicle detection can miss a ride.
What Motion Assist does
Motion Assist displays small bubbles near the screen edges. Google says they move in real time using the phone’s motion sensors to match vehicle turns, acceleration, and braking. The visual cues are intended to make phone use during travel more comfortable and may help reduce motion sickness; Google does not present the feature as a guaranteed treatment.
Google introduced Motion Assist in its September 2026 Android Drop as a bubble overlay that can start automatically or be controlled through Quick Settings. Google’s announcement describes the feature for phones using Android 17.
Does it work in every app?
That is not established by Google’s documentation. The official Motion Assist help page explains the edge bubbles but does not say that they appear over every app or screen, and it does not list supported or excluded apps. Treat universal app compatibility as unconfirmed rather than assuming the system-level overlay is guaranteed to appear everywhere.

If Motion Assist is missing in a particular app, the available official guidance does not identify a specific app exception or explain why it might be absent. It is therefore not possible to tell from the documentation alone whether the cause is app-specific or something else.
Requirements and availability
- Android version: Google requires Android 17 or higher.
- Google Play services: Google also requires an updated version, but its help page does not specify a minimum version number.
- Phone and region: Google’s reviewed documentation does not provide a complete list of supported manufacturers, models, or countries. Check your phone’s settings for Motion Assist instead of assuming it is available on every Android device.
Android Central reported on September 22, 2026, that Play services v26.37 was extending Motion Assist beyond Pixel phones, while retaining the Android 17-or-newer and current Play services requirements. Why Motion Assist may not turn on automatically
Automatic activation relies on the phone detecting that it is in a moving vehicle. Google cautions that detection may not always work, so a ride can begin without Motion Assist starting. Google recommends adding the Quick Settings tile so you can start or stop the feature manually.
Find Motion Assist and adjust its controls
- Search your phone’s Settings for Motion assist. Alternatively, open Settings, tap your profile, choose All services, then find Motion assist under Personal & device safety.
- On the Motion Assist settings page, add its tile, or open the Quick Settings edit menu and add it there. Use the tile to start or stop Motion Assist when automatic detection does not activate it.
- Use the settings to change bubble opacity, color theme, and shape, and to choose whether bubble styles are randomized.
When Motion Assist activates automatically, Google says a silent notification appears. Tap that notification to turn the feature off for that session.

What Motion Assist cannot promise
- Universal app coverage: Google publishes no guarantee or compatibility list, so behavior on a particular app or screen is undocumented.
- Reliable automatic start: vehicle detection can fail; manual control through Quick Settings is available.
- Prevention of motion sickness: Google describes Motion Assist as something that can help reduce symptoms. Its reviewed help page and announcement do not give a measured success rate or clinical result.
