Possibly, but there is not enough evidence to say it will noticeably lower your electricity bill. An SSD may use less power than a rotational hard drive, but the drive is only one part of a PC. The relevant number is the whole computer’s power draw while it plays YouTube—not a drive’s power specification by itself.
What the evidence says about SSD and HDD power
Microsoft’s Windows Server hardware guidance says that “SSD drives are more power efficient than rotational drives.” That is general direction, not a measured comparison of consumer PCs looping YouTube, and it does not quantify any bill savings. Microsoft’s guidance provides no whole-PC wattage for this use.
SanDisk publishes generic theoretical power ranges for SSD types, but these are not measurements of specific SanDisk products, do not include a matching HDD comparison, and do not estimate a PC’s total draw. SanDisk says it does not publish power-consumption information for its own products. Its figures therefore cannot establish how much an SSD would change the cost of your YouTube loop.

These figures are from SanDisk Support’s page published in 2024 and updated in 2026. SanDisk’s explanation and table are useful context for drive-level power, but not a basis for promising a particular saving.

Why the whole PC matters more than the drive specification
During playback, the computer’s processor, graphics hardware, display, browser, and network activity also contribute to its wall power. Whether the drive is mostly idle or actively reading data matters too. A drive-level figure cannot be substituted for the electricity use of the entire setup.
YouTube playback quality can change with connection speed, player or screen size, source upload quality, and browser support. YouTube also notes that some movies, shows, and live streams need more processing power, and recommends higher sustained connection speeds for higher resolutions. Those details make a generic “watts saved by switching drives” claim especially unreliable.

For a fair comparison, keep the same PC and playback setup: use the same video, resolution, browser, display configuration, and other settings. If comparing two different computers, their other hardware and settings may differ as well, so the result cannot be attributed to the drive alone. Measure the complete PC at the wall while it plays under conditions representative of your normal loop. A plug-in meter that measures whole-PC power can help; no particular meter or accuracy level is established here. Use the average watts during playback, your actual loop hours, and your electricity price per kWh:

Cost = (average watts × hours ÷ 1,000) × your price per kWh
- Measure representative playback. Run the loop with your usual video, resolution, browser, and display arrangement, and record average whole-PC watts rather than relying on the drive’s specification.
- Choose the period. Enter the number of hours you want to estimate—for example, your actual daily loop time or the hours in the billing period.
- Convert to energy. Multiply average watts by hours and divide by 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours (kWh).
- Apply your local rate. Multiply the kWh by the price you actually pay per kWh. Rates vary, so a universal bill estimate would not be meaningful.
- Compare drives only under matched conditions. If you can compare the same PC before and after a drive change, repeat the measurement with the same playback and system conditions. Treat the difference as a result for that particular setup, not a universal SSD saving.
Should you buy a 2.5-inch SATA SSD to reduce the bill?
A 2.5-inch SATA SSD is one relevant storage category, but the available generic SSD ranges do not establish a matched HDD-versus-SSD whole-PC saving. Do not buy one solely to cut the electricity cost of a looping YouTube PC on the strength of drive-level figures. If the exact recurring cost matters, measure your own system first; if you want an SSD for other reasons, consider those separately from an unquantified electricity saving.

Can I calculate the cost from my SSD’s idle-watt figure?
No. An idle drive figure is not the whole PC’s average wall power during playback. Measure the complete setup for a useful estimate.
Will changing the YouTube resolution affect the comparison?
It can change playback and processing demands. Keep resolution and other playback conditions the same when comparing measurements.
