Usually, a standalone Intel Optane SSD does not need the Optane Memory management app just because it stores Windows. An Optane Memory module that accelerates a separate system drive is different: that setup depends on a supported platform and the appropriate Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver and software. Check the exact device model before changing drivers or BIOS settings.
First identify which kind of Optane device you have
“Optane boot drive” can describe two different configurations, and their software requirements are not interchangeable.
- Standalone Optane SSD: The SSD itself stores Windows, as a conventional storage drive would. Intel identifies the Optane SSD 800P, 900P, and 905P as standard drives, not drives to be accelerated by Optane Memory software. Intel’s supported-drive guidance explains which drives can be accelerated.
- Optane Memory module: The module works with a separate supported drive to accelerate it. That drive can contain the operating system, but the platform, BIOS configuration, and RST software must meet the requirements for that module and system.
The product name alone does not tell you which configuration is installed. Check the model shown in your PC or motherboard specifications, BIOS, or device-management software.
Does a standalone Optane SSD need RST?
Not as a universal requirement. Intel’s boot guidance for the Optane SSD 800P specifies an M.2 connection that supports NVMe and UEFI firmware version 2.3.1 or later with NVMe support. The exact system and operating-system requirements still matter; consult the Intel Optane SSD 800P FAQ and the motherboard or PC vendor’s documentation.

Intel describes RST as an option in a specific Windows 7 installation scenario involving a platform with remapping support. That is not evidence that every 800P boot installation requires RST. Nor does it mean that the Optane Memory management application is needed for a standalone Optane SSD.
Intel also says the 800P, 900P, and 905P are not supported as drives to be accelerated by RST/Optane Memory software. They are storage drives in their own right, rather than acceleration modules.

When does Optane Memory require RST software?
When an Optane Memory module accelerates another drive, Intel’s documented setup depends on compatible processor and chipset support, the right BIOS configuration, and an applicable RST driver. Requirements vary by module and platform generation. Intel’s platform support guidance for Intel Optane Memory M Series and list of supported drives for acceleration are relevant to checking compatibility.
The RST driver and the Optane Memory and Storage Management application are separate parts of the software stack. Intel says the RST Windows driver must be installed before installing the management application. The app is for configuring or managing supported Optane/RST capabilities; it is not a blanket requirement for every Intel product branded Optane. Before changing an RST driver or BIOS setting
Do not uninstall a working RST driver or switch the BIOS storage mode as a generic troubleshooting step. Intel warns that removing the driver from a system using Optane Memory can prevent Windows from booting, make drives disappear from the operating system, and cause data loss. Intel’s RST driver removal guidance describes these risks.
Likewise, Intel cautions against changing VMD or storage settings after Windows is installed without following the system-specific procedure. See Intel’s VMD and RST configuration instructions and consult the PC or motherboard vendor. OEMs may customize generic driver packages, so the vendor’s package can be the appropriate choice; Intel notes this in its RST driver installation guidance for 8th- and 9th-generation platforms.

Windows 11 and older Optane platforms
Support depends on the platform generation, module, and driver—not just on whether the drive can boot. Intel’s Windows 11 Optane support guidance, last reviewed April 25, 2025, lists driver 17.11.0.1000 for supported 8th- and 9th-generation platforms and 18.6.1.1016 for supported 10th- and 11th-generation platforms; it says 7th-generation platforms are unsupported on Windows 11. These are dated, platform-specific figures, not universal current driver recommendations. Check the PC vendor’s support page for the exact configuration.
