A phone’s processor age alone does not determine when support ends. The manufacturer sets support for each model, while hardware capabilities can affect major OS upgrades and chipset-vendor support can affect Android security patches. Check the exact phone model and distinguish OS upgrades from security updates.
Why processor age does not tell the whole story
A processor is one part of the hardware a new operating system must support. Apple’s software-update guidance says older devices may be ineligible for upgrades if they lack the hardware capabilities required by the new software. That explains why hardware can limit an upgrade, but it does not establish a fixed cutoff based on a chip’s age—or mean the phone stops receiving every kind of update at once. Apple’s deployment guide describes this distinction.
For Android security patches, chipset-vendor support can also matter. Samsung Mobile Security says availability depends on factors including update complexity, hardware specifications, and chipset-vendor and third-party support. Those are among the factors, not a rule that every older processor immediately loses patches. Samsung’s security-update scope explains the qualification.
OS upgrades and security updates are different
A major operating-system upgrade adds a new OS version. Security updates address vulnerabilities and may continue separately, depending on the model and the manufacturer’s releases. Apple distinguishes major OS upgrades from smaller software updates and Background Security Improvements. Therefore, a phone that no longer qualifies for the newest major OS version may still receive another update, but do not assume that any update it receives fixes every known security issue.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
When comparing phones or checking your current one, record OS-upgrade eligibility and security-update eligibility separately. A stated period for one does not automatically promise the same period for the other.
Support periods differ by phone model and generation
These manufacturer policies illustrate why the brand or processor name alone is not enough. Google’s policy periods below are counted from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the US. Samsung’s example is a historical 2022 announcement for select devices, not a commitment that applies to every Galaxy phone.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

| Google Pixel 8 and later | Seven years | Seven years | From first availability on the Google Store in the US; see Google’s Pixel update policy. |
| Google Pixel 6 and 7 families, and Pixel Fold | Five years | Five years | From first availability on the Google Store in the US; see Google’s Pixel update policy. |
| Pixel 5a and earlier models named by Google | No longer receive Android version updates | No longer receive Android security updates | Applies to models Google lists as no longer supported; check its current policy page for the exact model: Google Pixel update policy. |
| Select Samsung Galaxy devices in Samsung’s 2022 announcement | Four OS upgrades | Up to five years | Availability and timing vary by device and depend in part on Android OS upgrade timing; see Samsung’s 2022 announcement. This historical commitment should not be generalized to all Galaxy phones. |
For example, Google identifies the Pixel 8 as using its Tensor G3 processor, while its support policy gives Pixel 8 and later seven years of OS and security updates. That is a model-specific policy example, not evidence that a newer or faster processor by itself guarantees longer support. Google Pixel 8 specifications.
How to check whether your phone is still supported
- Identify the exact model and market. Use the model name and, if available, the model number. Phones sold under a similar name can have different support terms by generation or market.
- Find the manufacturer’s official update policy. Search its software or security-update page for your exact model, not just the processor family or brand.
- Read the coverage terms. Check whether the policy covers OS upgrades, security patches, or both, and when its support period begins.
- Check the installed software and patch level. On Pixel, Google documents the Android version and security-update level under the phone’s software update settings. Update rollouts can be gradual and depend on the device and carrier. Google’s Pixel update policy provides the rollout qualification.
- Ask if the status is unclear. Contact the manufacturer or carrier rather than inferring support status from the processor name.
What to do if support has ended
If the manufacturer lists your exact model as no longer receiving security updates, treat it as outside the manufacturer’s ongoing security-patch coverage. You can still use it, but weigh that limitation before relying on it for sensitive accounts, payments, or other important tasks. If you are comparing replacements, compare the published OS and security-update terms for each exact model and note when each period starts; do not use processor age as a substitute for that check.
