A chat tool can feel as if it remembers you, but in many API-based designs the application sends earlier messages again with each request. That replay can increase input-token use as a conversation grows. Provider-managed conversation state can spare an application from rebuilding the transcript, but it does not necessarily make past input free; prompt caching and external memory are separate mechanisms with different trade-offs.
What “memory” means in an API chat
A model works from the context supplied for a request or interaction state, subject to the model’s context window. In a manually managed chat, the application often keeps a transcript and includes some or all of it in each new request. The interface may look continuous, even though the application is repeatedly supplying prior turns.
This is not how every API must work. Some providers offer stateful interfaces that store or reference conversation items. The key distinction is between what the application must send explicitly and what the service stores or retrieves on its behalf—not between “memory” and a magically free, unlimited history.
Why replaying history can raise token use
When each request includes earlier user and assistant messages, the model processes that supplied history as input. As the transcript grows, later calls can contain more input tokens. Under a simplified pattern where each turn repeats all earlier turns, the amount of history sent per call grows roughly linearly with conversation length, while the accumulated replay across many calls can tend toward quadratic growth. Redis describes this pattern in its June 17, 2026 technical article; it is an explanatory model, not a universal cost curve or benchmark.

Actual usage depends on what the application retains, how requests are structured, whether the provider manages state, whether prompt caching applies, and the conversation’s length. There is no single dollar estimate that fits all providers and models. Cost also depends on input and output quantities, cache eligibility, and current rates.
Four mechanisms that are easy to confuse

Provider-managed state is convenience, not free context
OpenAI documents stateful conversation handling in the Responses API and a Conversations API object that can persist conversation items across sessions, devices, or jobs—including messages, tool calls, and tool outputs. This is an OpenAI-specific feature, not evidence that all providers manage state the same way. See the official conversation-state documentation.

OpenAI also states that previous input tokens in a response chain are billed as input tokens. So an API feature may spare the application from manually reconstructing a transcript without eliminating the billing consequences of historical input. Check the documentation and pricing for the specific provider, model, and API path you use.

Prompt caching is a processing optimization for matching prompt prefixes, not a general-purpose conversation memory system. OpenAI says caching can lower latency and the cost of cached input; new input still needs processing, and the prefix must match for reuse. A long-running session alone does not promise a cache hit. Its prompt-caching documentation describes the mechanism; eligibility and rates can vary by model and change over time.

For an application, this means prompt structure matters: changing a prefix can affect whether it matches, while adding a new user message still introduces new input. Do not assume that every repeated token is cached or that cached input is free.
External memory: retrieve what matters instead of replaying everything
Information intended to persist across sessions can be stored outside the immediate model context. The application can then retrieve selected facts, summaries, or relevant past material and include those in a later request. This differs from replaying the full transcript: the context contains a chosen subset rather than every prior turn.

Selective retrieval shifts work to the application. It must decide what to retain, find relevant items, and handle information that has changed or become stale. Redis discusses this application-layer approach in its vendor-authored overview; its architectural guidance is not a neutral quantitative comparison of implementations.

- Use manual replay when you need direct control over exactly which turns are sent and are prepared to manage transcript length and persistence.
- Use provider-managed state when the provider’s conversation features fit your workflow and you want the service to manage conversation continuity. Verify the provider’s billing and retention behavior rather than inferring it from the word “stateful.”
- Use prompt caching as a possible efficiency benefit for matching prefixes, not as a substitute for deciding what context belongs in a request.
- Use external selective retrieval when useful facts must persist beyond a session or replaying the whole transcript is unnecessary. Plan for retrieval quality and updates.
These approaches can be combined, but they solve different problems: state handling determines how conversation material is carried forward, caching can reuse eligible computation, and external memory selects information to reintroduce. For any cost estimate, use the current rates for the chosen provider and model and account for the actual input, output, and cache behavior; no universal price follows from the word “memory.”
