Not necessarily. ARM can cost less for particular providers and workloads, but the architecture label alone does not tell you which VPS is cheaper—or whether it can reliably sustain your YouTube stream. Compare the full plan cost, including transfer and storage, then test the actual stream profile and software you intend to run.

What determines the real cost?

A useful comparison is between two plans that are available in the same region and billing context and can handle the same workload. A low monthly sticker price is not enough if the plan has less outbound transfer, charges for overages, or cannot sustain the encoding you need.

  • Provider and region: Compare current plans in the same geography. Prices and included transfer can vary by region and change over time.
  • CPU and workload: Record the vCPU count and test the process you will actually use. Performance depends on the codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and encoding preset—not just whether the processor is ARM or x86.
  • Relay or re-encode: Determine whether your software sends a compatible, already-encoded file or decodes and re-encodes it. Those are different workloads, and CPU needs can differ. The available benchmark evidence does not quantify the difference for your setup.
  • Storage and transfer: Account for the video files, continuous outbound stream, included transfer allowance, and any overage exposure.
  • Administration and recovery: Include the time and effort to install, maintain, monitor, and restart your own streaming process after interruptions.

There is no established cheapest plan for every creator. The answer depends on your provider, region, stream profile, software, and whether you re-encode.

What the published prices and ARM claims actually show

Amazon Lightsail’s published Linux public-IPv4 bundles list these examples, retrieved October 3, 2026. They are not an ARM-versus-x86 pair, and the listed resources do not establish that either plan can sustain a particular encode. AWS also notes that transfer allowance can vary by region. AWS says its Graviton-based EC2 instances cost up to 20% less than comparable x86-based Amazon EC2 instances on its current product page, retrieved October 3, 2026. That is AWS’s claim about comparable EC2 instances, not a general price guarantee for VPS providers or a finding about continuous YouTube looping. Read AWS’s Graviton information.

What the ARM-versus-x86 encoding study says—and does not say

A 2021 IEEE study, “Where to Encode: A Performance Analysis of x86 and Arm-based Amazon EC2 Instances,” tested selected Graviton2 ARM and x86 EC2 families with FFmpeg and x264/x265. It reported time and cost savings of up to 33.63% in selected bitrate and preset experiments, especially with x264. The authors’ recommendations varied by codec and settings; some low-bitrate or preset combinations and x265 cases favored x86.

The 33.63% figure is a maximum in those particular 2021 experiments, not a general ARM VPS discount, current benchmark for all processors, or prediction of your monthly bill. Use it as evidence that results can depend on the encoding workload—not as a plan-selection shortcut. Read the IEEE study.

Choose a YouTube stream profile before comparing CPUs

YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies how to send a stream; it does not require ARM or x86 or give a universal VPS size for prerecorded loops. Its official guidance recommends RTMPS for ordinary streaming, supports RTMP/RTMPS, and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a 2-second keyframe frequency, not over 4 seconds, and gives frame rates up to 60 fps. Follow the settings for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you actually choose rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream.

YouTube profile example H.264 recommended bitrate AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps 6 Mbps

These are examples from YouTube’s recommended bitrate table, not universal settings. Consult the current YouTube live encoder settings for the row matching your stream and test before going live. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast, then monitoring stream health.

How to compare two VPS plans fairly

  1. Fix the stream profile. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval using YouTube’s guidance.
  2. Write down what the software does. Identify whether the process relays the encoded file unchanged or performs a transcode, and note its encoder, preset, and settings.
  3. Match providers and regions. Compare plans with their current billing period, vCPU and memory, storage, transfer allowance, and overage terms recorded. Avoid treating unrelated plans as an ARM/x86 pair.
  4. Test the actual workload over time. Confirm the VPS can keep the loop running at the intended settings, without relying on a brief startup test as proof of sustained performance. Check stream health and whether the process recovers after interruption.
  5. Calculate total cost. Add the VPS charge, storage, possible transfer overages, and the value of your setup and maintenance time. The published examples above do not calculate this total for your workload.

Copyright, reused content, and monetization are separate questions

A VPS that can send a continuous stream does not make its contents eligible for monetization. YouTube says monetized content should be original and authentic and not mass-produced, generic, repetitive, or manipulative; its policy applies to live streams. YouTube renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” on July 15, 2025, to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under the existing policy. A loop is a broadcast format, not a guarantee that a channel meets monetization rules. Check the YouTube channel monetization policies and ensure you have the rights needed to stream your material.

When a managed cloud service may be a better fit

If you would rather not configure and maintain an encoder VPS, compare a managed service’s current terms against your self-hosted total cost. StreamNeo is a YouTube service for uploaded videos and playlists: add your YouTube stream key and start the stream, which runs from the cloud. It is not a camera-based live production tool. Its current terms and suitability should be checked directly at StreamNeo.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams at the quality it was made, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card required. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
