AI can make critical thinking harder to build when it supplies the answer and leaves people with less reasoning to do. Evidence links greater confidence in generative AI with less reported critical-thinking effort, and education research warns that better AI-assisted performance does not necessarily mean more learning. But current evidence does not show that AI universally or permanently damages critical-thinking ability. How it is used matters: AI can also support learning when it is guided by educational goals and keeps learners actively reasoning.
Does AI make people worse at critical thinking?
Not necessarily. The clearest finding is about effort during a task, not permanent loss of ability. A peer-reviewed CHI 2025 study surveyed 319 knowledge workers and analyzed 936 first-hand examples of generative AI use. People who reported greater confidence in GenAI also reported less critical-thinking effort; people with greater confidence in their own ability to do a task reported more. These are associations from a survey, not proof that AI caused a decline in skill.
The study’s participants also described a shift in what critical thinking involved: checking information, combining AI output with other material, and taking responsibility for the result. As the authors put it, “Qualitatively, GenAI shifts the nature of critical thinking toward information verification, response integration, and task stewardship.” Read the CHI 2025 study.
That shift can be useful, but it is not the same as practicing every skill the task might otherwise require. If a tool handles the problem-solving, drafting, or explanation, a person may have less opportunity to practice those parts. The study does not establish whether repeated use produces lasting changes in critical-thinking ability.

Why a better AI-assisted answer may not mean more learning
Task performance and learning are different outcomes. The OECD’s Digital Education Outlook 2026 reports that general-purpose GenAI can improve performance on a task without necessarily producing learning gains. It describes risks from cognitive offloading, including disengagement and weaker metacognitive effort, and notes that some performance advantages disappear or reverse when learners sit exams without AI access.
The distinction is practical: a polished answer shows what a person and a tool produced together; it does not, by itself, show what the person can recall, explain, or apply independently. The OECD contrasts general-purpose tools with GenAI used or designed for educational purposes, which tends to show sustained learning improvements in the evidence it reviews. When AI can support learning instead of replacing thinking
AI is more likely to serve as a learning aid when it makes the learner do meaningful intellectual work rather than handing over a finished response. A Microsoft Research review of empirical classroom evidence, published in October 2025, recommends introducing AI when learners are ready, teaching them to evaluate AI output, using AI to supplement rather than replace traditional learning, and retaining teacher guidance. It also points to engagement measures such as limiting copy-and-paste, improving metacognitive calibration, and prompting critical thinking. Outcomes vary across learner groups and contexts. The OECD similarly recommends using GenAI selectively and purposefully to enrich learning, not replace cognitive effort. It says education should develop foundational knowledge and independent thinking with and without AI. UNESCO’s guidance emphasizes human-centered, age-appropriate use, privacy protection, ethical validation, and pedagogical design; it is policy guidance, not evidence that a specific learning outcome is guaranteed. How to use AI without handing over the thinking
These practices apply the cited educational guidance; the studies above have not established that they prevent long-term skill loss.
- Try first, then ask. Attempt the problem or outline your argument before opening AI. This gives you a basis for judging whether its response makes sense.
- Ask for help with reasoning, not a finished submission. Request a hint, a counterargument, a critique of your draft, or questions that test your assumptions. Avoid treating a complete answer as proof that you understand the material.
- Verify important claims. Check factual statements against reliable sources, and look for missing context, unsupported conclusions, or errors before using them.
- Explain the result in your own words. Make sure you can justify the conclusion and describe the reasoning without relying on AI’s phrasing.
- Practice without AI as well. Use unaided recall or application occasionally to check what you can do independently, especially before an assessment where AI will not be available.
How to judge whether an AI use case supports learning
These are practical questions drawn from OECD, Microsoft Research, and UNESCO guidance—not a tested ranking of products.

- Purpose: Is AI helping you practice, or producing work that will be judged as your own final performance?
- Thinking before answers: Do you have to reason or attempt the task before seeing AI’s solution?
- Quality of interaction: Does the tool prompt explanation, verification, and reflection, or simply provide a polished response?
- Subject knowledge: Do you have enough background to spot mistakes and assess the answer?
- Independent follow-up: Will you later recall or apply the idea without AI?
- Human oversight and privacy: In a learning setting, is a teacher involved, and are appropriate privacy protections in place?
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The sources point to a credible risk: when AI handles the cognitively demanding parts of a task, users may do less of the work that develops judgment. They also show why “AI makes critical thinking worse” is too broad as a settled conclusion. The CHI study is a self-reported survey of knowledge workers, not a long-term experiment with students. The OECD reviews emerging educational evidence, and its findings distinguish general-purpose use from pedagogically guided use. Long-term causal effects remain unresolved across ages, subjects, and patterns of use.
