A capture card does not automatically lower the game’s FPS. In a console passthrough setup, it sends the HDMI signal to your display while also providing a feed to your computer. But a single-PC gaming-and-streaming setup can lose performance because the game, OBS scene rendering, and encoding share system resources. A stuttering recording, changed display refresh rate, delayed preview, or OBS network warning can each have a different cause.
Does a capture card drop FPS?
There is no universal FPS-loss figure for capture cards. The official sources cited here describe signal passthrough, capture formats, and OBS resource demands, but do not establish a controlled, cross-card measurement of how many game frames a card costs. So it would be inaccurate to promise zero impact in every setup—or to assume the card itself is responsible whenever FPS falls.
Start by separating the measures involved: the game’s rendered FPS, the display’s refresh rate, the frames sent to recording or streaming software, OBS rendering and encoding performance, preview delay, and network delivery. They are related, but they are not interchangeable.

The game’s FPS falls
If the game’s own FPS counter drops, check whether streaming or recording is running on the same computer. OBS uses GPU resources to composite scenes, and the game and OBS can compete for limited capacity. OBS recommends leaving resources available for OBS; options include capping the game’s FPS, simplifying scenes, or reducing output settings. Those steps can help, but no single change is guaranteed to fix every system. See the OBS encoding-performance troubleshooting guide.

A capture card does not eliminate the work of running a game and stream on one PC. Elgato explains that the card receives the HDMI video signal; on a single-PC setup, OBS still captures and encodes using that computer’s CPU or hardware encoder. In a dual-PC setup, a separate streaming PC can handle OBS and encoding. Elgato’s streaming explainer describes the distinction.
The game is smooth, but the recording or stream stutters
That points toward OBS rendering or encoding performance, or a mismatch between the card’s capture mode and the software’s settings—not necessarily a change in the game’s FPS. Check the format arriving in OBS separately from the signal being passed through to the display. A card can support one resolution and refresh rate for passthrough while sending a different format to capture software.

The display’s refresh rate changes
Treat the source, capture card, cable or connection, and display as one signal chain. Each part must support the intended resolution and refresh rate. Also distinguish passthrough from capture: a high-refresh signal reaching the display does not mean the software is recording at the same frame rate.

For example, Elgato says its 4K Capture Utility records a 120 Hz signal at 60 fps unless another application is configured for 120 fps. Elgato says other software, such as OBS, can record the full 120 Hz signal when configured for 120 fps. This is specific guidance about that utility and setup, not a universal rule for all capture software. See Elgato’s 120 Hz capture guide.

OBS reports dropped frames during a livestream
OBS uses “dropped frames” to describe a stream connection or bitrate problem between your computer and the stream server. That warning is not, by itself, evidence that the game’s FPS fell or that the capture card caused a performance penalty. Check whether your connection can sustain the configured bitrate using the OBS stream-connection troubleshooting guide.
Playing through the OBS preview feels delayed
The preview is a software capture feed; HDMI passthrough is a different path that sends the signal to a TV or monitor. When passthrough is available, use it for gameplay rather than relying on the preview. OBS’s device-certification criteria include under 80 ms average additional latency and zero-latency passthrough where present. That is a certification criterion, not a guarantee about every card or setup. See OBS’s console-capture FAQ and its certified-device criteria.

How to check your setup
- Set a baseline. With the capture card and streaming or recording software inactive, note the game’s FPS and the display refresh rate.
- Connect the signal chain. Connect the console or PC through the card to the display. Use HDMI passthrough for gameplay when available, and confirm that the source, card, cable or connection, and display all support your intended resolution and refresh rate. Elgato’s capture-card explainer describes how passthrough sends the signal to the display while the card supplies a feed to the computer.
- Check capture separately from passthrough. Confirm the capture resolution and frame rate selected in your software; do not infer them from the passthrough specification. Elgato’s HD60 X supported-resolutions page illustrates how input, passthrough, and capture formats differ. Elgato labels that page legacy and cautions that it may not match current hardware or software, so use it as an example rather than a current specification for other devices.
- If game FPS drops while OBS runs on the same PC, reduce competing workload: cap game FPS to leave GPU capacity for OBS, simplify scenes, or reduce output resolution or frame rate as appropriate. OBS lists these as troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes.
- If the game remains smooth but OBS reports network-dropped frames, troubleshoot the connection and whether it can sustain the configured bitrate before changing capture-card settings.
What to compare when choosing a capture card
Do not treat a passthrough specification as a capture specification. Compare the signal you want on your display with the format you need in OBS or your recording software.

Elgato describes its 4K X as a high-refresh capture and passthrough option. The HD60 X documentation above is an example of separate input and capture formats, but its page is marked legacy; do not assume its matrix is current or applies to other cards.
