Docker Sandboxes are not ordinary containers sharing the host kernel: Docker documents each local Sandbox as a lightweight microVM with its own Linux kernel. The practical comparison is between Docker’s agent-focused Sandbox workflow and a separately managed, general-purpose VM. Choose based on what files, credentials, tools, network access, hardware, and administrative controls the agent needs—not on an assumption that either option is inherently safer or faster.
Are Docker Sandboxes containers or virtual machines?
Docker Docs states: “Every sandbox runs inside a lightweight microVM with its own Linux kernel.” Each local Sandbox also has a separate Docker Engine. That makes it a VM-based environment with additional agent-oriented controls, rather than a normal container isolated only by host-kernel features.
The word “VM” alone does not establish an equivalent setup. A separately managed VM’s boundary and capabilities depend on its hypervisor or cloud service, guest configuration, host integrations, and operator policies. The useful question is what actually crosses the boundary in either setup: mounted files, sockets, credentials, tools, and network routes.
How do the options compare?
| Decision area | Docker Sandbox | Separately managed VM |
|---|---|---|
| Isolation | Local Sandbox is documented as a microVM with its own Linux kernel and separate Docker Engine. (Docker Docs, “Isolation layers”) | Depends on the selected hypervisor or service and its configuration; there is no single standard VM setup. |
| Workspace | Can use no host workspace mount, a read-write direct mount, or a read-only source mount with a private clone. (Docker Docs, “Isolation layers” and “Default security posture”) | Shared folders, copied images, or network access are possible, depending on the setup. |
| Network and tools | Outbound traffic is governed by network policy; local stdio MCP servers execute on the host. (Docker Docs, “Default security posture” and “Isolation layers”) | Guest networking, firewalls, and host integrations are determined by the operator or provider. |
| Credentials | Docker describes a host-side proxy for credentials supplied through it; SSH-agent forwarding can separately grant signing access. (Docker Docs, “Isolation layers”) | Secret exposure depends on mounts, agent sockets, metadata access, and other configured integrations. |
| Compute location | Local Sandboxes use host resources; cloud Sandboxes run on Docker-managed compute and cannot use host paths or hardware. (Docker Docs, “Sandboxes overview” and cloud/local documentation) | Can be local or provider-hosted, with hardware and administration depending on the chosen environment. |
| Persistence | Sandbox state persists across stops and restarts until the Sandbox is removed. (Docker Docs, “Default security posture”) | Depends on the VM’s disk, snapshot, and lifecycle configuration. |
What can an AI agent access inside a Docker Sandbox?
Workspace files depend on the mount mode
A Sandbox is not automatically separated from the project files you give it. In direct mode, the selected working tree is mounted read-write, so the agent can change or delete files there. Docker’s sbx run command uses the current directory as the workspace if you do not pass a workspace path; check the command’s working directory before launching an agent.

Clone mode narrows write-through risk: the Git root is mounted read-only, while the agent works in a private clone inside the VM. But this does not make repository contents secret. Files under the Git root remain readable, including untracked files such as .env if they are present. If a task should not reveal a credential, keep it outside the repository root the Sandbox can read, and inspect the workspace contents before starting.
A mountless workflow avoids exposing a host working tree, but may not fit tasks that need an existing project. Choose the narrowest workspace mode compatible with the work, and treat the agent as able to read anything mounted into its workspace.

VM isolation is not privilege separation inside the VM
Docker says the agent has sudo privileges inside the Sandbox and full control of the VM filesystem. The isolation boundary is the VM, not a restricted account within it. That can be useful when an agent needs to install dependencies or modify its environment, but it means in-VM permissions should not be mistaken for a second barrier protecting Sandbox data.
How do network access, MCP servers, and credentials cross the boundary?
Network rules constrain outbound connections, but are configurable
Docker’s documented local default blocks outbound TCP—including HTTP, HTTPS, and SSH—unless an explicit rule permits the destination. UDP is disabled by default and ICMP is blocked; network rules can be customized. An agent that needs a package registry, model endpoint, or other service may therefore require an allow rule. Review which destinations you permit rather than treating “network enabled” as a single unrestricted setting.

Host tools and forwarded signing access remain consequential
Local stdio MCP servers execute on the host, outside the Sandbox. Giving an agent access to one is a trusted host integration: the Sandbox does not move that server’s execution into the VM. Review the server’s capabilities and the operations exposed to the agent.
SSH-agent forwarding can let Sandbox processes request signatures while the private key stays on the host. The key is not copied into the VM, but the agent still receives the ability to request signatures through the forwarded agent. Consider whether that authority is appropriate for the task.

Credential proxying is specific, not universal protection
Docker describes a host-side proxy that supplies credentials provided through it to outbound requests, keeping those credentials outside the VM. This does not mean every credential is inaccessible to the agent: users can explicitly pass secrets or expose them through files, mounts, or integrations. Protect credentials by controlling both the proxy configuration and the other paths through which the agent could obtain them.

Choose Docker Sandbox when the agent workflow is the priority
- You want a local microVM with a separate Docker Engine and Docker’s agent-oriented controls.
- You need to select a workspace boundary, such as a private clone rather than direct write access to the host tree.
- You want policy-controlled outbound traffic and can review host-side integrations such as MCP servers or SSH-agent forwarding.
Choose a separately managed VM when your operational controls are the priority
- Your organization needs to administer the guest lifecycle, VM image, infrastructure, or provider controls independently.
- Your existing procedures depend on VM-level monitoring, access management, networking, or persistence settings.
- You need a particular guest or hardware configuration and have verified the selected hypervisor or service supports it.
These are workflow fits, not security rankings. In either case, inspect the actual mounts, credentials, network routes, tool integrations, and administrative controls. A VM is not automatically isolated from sensitive resources if they are mounted or forwarded into it, and a Sandbox is not a guarantee against every threat.

What about local hardware, persistence, and cost?
Local Docker Sandboxes use host compute and may support host integrations such as GPU, USB, display, and nested virtualization. Availability depends on the host and supported configuration. Docker cloud Sandboxes run on Docker-managed compute and cannot mount host paths or use host hardware, so they are not a way to give a remote agent direct access to a local GPU or USB device.
Docker’s documentation describes the sbx CLI and local Sandbox compute as free to use, cloud compute as pay-as-you-go, and model-provider charges as separate. It also describes organization-wide management for local network, filesystem, and MCP policies as available through a separate paid subscription. These product and commercial terms can change; check Docker’s current service terms for your account and region before budgeting.
Stopping a local Sandbox is not the same as deleting it: its filesystem and installed state persist across stops and restarts until removal. The Sandbox VM image, Docker images, layers, and volumes also consume disk space. Removal deletes Sandbox state, while files in a direct-mounted host workspace remain on the host. A separately managed VM’s retention and storage behavior depends on its disk and lifecycle settings.
Is one option faster or more secure?
Docker’s documentation does not provide an independent head-to-head performance benchmark for Docker Sandboxes and separately managed VMs running AI agents. It describes disk and resource overhead qualitatively, not as comparative measurements. There is therefore no supported basis here for claiming a universal winner on speed, startup time, throughput, or cost.
