Two Docker Engine vulnerabilities disclosed by the Moby project on May 18, 2026, can affect host paths when an operator uses docker cp with a malicious running container. CVE-2026-41568 can create empty files or directories at host paths; CVE-2026-42306 can redirect a bind mount and potentially overwrite host files. Neither advisory describes an unauthenticated remote attacker simply reading arbitrary host files. Docker Engine 29.5.1 is the upstream patched release for both.
What the Docker vulnerabilities can do
Both flaws involve a race condition during docker cp setup. A process inside a running container with a volume mount can rapidly swap symlinks while the Docker daemon handles a copy operation. If an operator initiates docker cp into that container—or a client invokes the corresponding archive API operation—the race may redirect a filesystem operation onto a host path.
The two vulnerabilities have different outcomes:
| CVE | Race and host effect | Severity |
|---|---|---|
| CVE-2026-41568 | During mountpoint creation, a symlink swap can cause Docker to create empty files or directories at arbitrary absolute host paths. The advisory says the flaw does not read or write existing host files. | Moderate; CVSS 3.1 score 6.1 |
| CVE-2026-42306 | Between mountpoint creation and the mount system call, a symlink swap can redirect a bind mount to a host path. Writable volume contents may overwrite files there; a read-only mount may temporarily mask the path. | High; CVSS 3.1 score 7.2 |
The Moby project describes CVE-2026-41568 as a race that can create empty filesystem objects at arbitrary host paths, and CVE-2026-42306 as a race that can redirect a bind mount, potentially overwriting host files or causing denial of service. The CVSS scores are specific to each vulnerability; they are not a measure of confirmed incidents or prevalence.
What an attacker needs
These are local attack scenarios, not a claim that any Docker container can independently reach the host. The advisories list high attack complexity, low privileges, and required user interaction. The relevant conditions are:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- A running container has at least one volume mount.
- A process in the container can rapidly replace a symlink at the destination path or one of its parent components.
- A Docker operator triggers
docker cpinto the container, or an authorized client invokes an applicable archive API operation.
Containers without volume mounts are listed as unaffected by these advisories. For CVE-2026-42306, a temporary mount does not undo any writes already made to the host path.
How to tell whether your Docker installation is affected
The upstream advisories mark Docker Engine versions earlier than 29.5.1 as affected and 29.5.1 as patched. For the Moby v2 daemon, they list versions earlier than v2.0.0-beta.14 as affected and that beta release as patched.

Check the version and lineage you actually operate, then verify the status of your specific package with its distributor or product vendor. A downstream vendor may backport a fix without changing the upstream version number, so do not infer package status from the version alone.
How to fix and reduce exposure
- Upgrade Docker Engine. Move to upstream Docker Engine 29.5.1 or a later fixed release. If you run the Moby v2 daemon, consult its release information for v2.0.0-beta.14 or later. For vendor-packaged builds, follow the vendor’s security notice and confirm whether the patch is included.
- Use trusted images. The advisories recommend running containers only from trusted images, especially where users may invoke
docker cp. - Avoid copying into untrusted running containers. Do not perform
docker cpoperations with a container whose image or running processes you do not trust. - Restrict the archive API where appropriate. Use Docker authorization plugins to limit access to
PUT /containers/{id}/archiveandHEAD /containers/{id}/archive, as applicable to your environment. These controls reduce exposure; they do not replace installing the fixed release.
Keep CVE-2026-41567 separate
CVE-2026-41567 is a different Docker issue, not another name for either docker cp race described above. Its surfaced advisory concerns a malicious image executing arbitrary code with daemon (host-root) privileges when a user uploads a compressed archive into a container. Check its own advisory and the relevant vendor’s package guidance rather than applying the fixes for CVE-2026-41568 or CVE-2026-42306 by assumption: GitLab Advisory Database: CVE-2026-41567.
