No—not for every Raspberry Pi. For ordinary use, a case is optional if your only concern is cooling: the SoC has built-in thermal throttling to limit overheating damage. A case is worthwhile when you need physical protection, secure mounting, tidier access to ports or GPIO, or cooling for a demanding workload. The best choice depends on your board model and how you plan to use it.
What a case does—and what it does not
A case encloses the exposed board. That can help protect it from bumps, accidental contact and dust, and can make it easier to mount in a finished project. It also affects how easily you can reach ports, GPIO pins and expansion hardware. Raspberry Pi describes its cases as board protection, but the practical value depends on the installation: a stationary board in a protected test setup may be fine without one.
A case is not automatically a cooling requirement. Raspberry Pi documentation says, “Thanks to built-in throttling, heatsinks are not necessary to prevent overheating damage to the SoC.” Throttling reduces CPU speed when needed; that protects the chip, but can reduce performance under sustained load. A case with a fan or another cooling solution may help keep performance up in that situation.
When to use a case
- Choose an enclosure if the board may be handled, bumped, exposed to dust or accidental contact, or installed where it needs to be mounted securely.
- Consider a case with active cooling for a Raspberry Pi 5 that runs demanding tasks continuously, especially if monitoring shows high temperatures or throttling.
- Check access before buying if your project needs GPIO pins, HATs, cables, frequent maintenance or open airflow. A case’s lid, openings and mounting arrangement can determine whether it suits the build.
- A bare board can be reasonable in a stationary, protected setup where open access and airflow matter more than enclosure protection.
Does Raspberry Pi 5 need cooling?
For normal usage, Raspberry Pi says cooling is optional. Under heavy, continuous load, however, the Pi 5 can reach its thermal limit and throttle. Raspberry Pi’s 2023 test article measured an uncooled Pi 5 idling at about 65°C on an open-air lab bench; during its extended stress test, the processor stabilized just above the 85°C thermal limit. These are results from that board, ambient environment and test setup—not universal temperature predictions.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In the same 2023 tests, the official case fan brought reported idle temperature to around 48°C. Under sustained load, the reported maximum was approximately 72°C with the lid removed and approximately 74°C with the lid fitted. The separately fitted Active Cooler was reported at about 45°C idle and 60°C stabilized under sustained load, with maximum readings of 62–63°C. These figures illustrate results in Raspberry Pi’s test conditions; they do not guarantee the same temperatures in another enclosure or workload.
If you want to check a Pi 5 in your own setup, Raspberry Pi documentation notes that Linux-based SoC temperature measurements can be inaccurate due to device architecture and upstream monitoring code. It identifies vcgencmd measure_temp as an accurate, instantaneous reading because it communicates with the GPU. A reading is useful context, but there is no universal workload or temperature threshold in the cited guidance at which every user must add a case or cooler.

Check compatibility and access before choosing
Cases are model-specific: a case made for one Raspberry Pi generation should not be assumed to fit another. Raspberry Pi’s catalog lists separate cases for Raspberry Pi 5, Raspberry Pi 4, Raspberry Pi 3, Model A+ and the Raspberry Pi Zero family, as well as a separate Pi 4 Case Fan. Confirm the exact board model and case compatibility before purchase.
The official Pi 5 case is a clip-together, four-part enclosure with a temperature-controlled fan, a small processor heatsink, a removable lid and a breakout slot for cables and GPIO. It has integrated stacking features and supports HAT mounting with stand-offs and GPIO header extenders, but those accessories are not included. Its fan connects to the Raspberry Pi 5 fan header.

If you plan to use an Active Cooler, its brief specifies Raspberry Pi 5 and says to keep it in a well-ventilated environment; do not cover a case used with the cooler. Do not assume a third-party case will fit or ventilate adequately: check its dimensions, openings and manufacturer guidance for that specific combination.

How to make the decision
- Identify your board. Match the case to the exact Raspberry Pi model rather than relying on a family resemblance.
- List the physical needs. Decide whether the board needs protection or mounting, and whether the build requires GPIO, HATs, cable access or frequent opening.
- Consider the workload. For ordinary use, cooling is optional. For sustained heavy Pi 5 workloads, watch for high temperatures or throttling and consider a fan or cooler if performance is affected.
- Check airflow and included parts. Verify openings, lid clearance and cooler fit. For HATs, check whether required standoffs or header extenders are included or need to be sourced separately.
