If your Windows laptop’s sound works normally, you do not need to hunt for the newest audio driver or update it on a schedule. Check Windows Update for an applicable audio driver update; if you are troubleshooting a sound problem, use Windows’ built-in tools first and get any manual download from the support page for your exact laptop model.
When an audio driver update is worth doing
An audio driver helps Windows communicate with your laptop’s sound hardware. Update it when Windows Update offers a relevant driver, or when you are troubleshooting a specific problem such as missing, distorted, or unreliable sound. A driver being older than another available version is not, by itself, a reason to replace one that is working.
Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the starting point for driver updates. Audio drivers may appear as optional or recommended updates. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities; use Windows or the laptop maker’s official support route instead.
Choose the next step based on what happened

| Sound is missing, distorted, or otherwise faulty | Check the selected output device, run Windows sound troubleshooting, and check Windows Update. If the issue remains, try Device Manager or the laptop maker’s exact-model driver page. |
| Sound failed after a Windows update | Consider rolling back the audio driver if that option is available. A newer driver is not automatically the right fix for a problem that began after an update. |
| Windows is running on a Mac through Boot Camp and built-in sound fails | Check Apple’s Windows support software for that Mac and Windows installation; the usual Windows-laptop manufacturer steps may not apply. |
How to check for an audio driver update in Windows
- Check Windows Update. Open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates. Install an applicable audio driver update if one is offered, then restart if Windows requests it.
- Search in Device Manager if the problem persists. Open Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers, select the audio device, and choose Update driver → Search automatically for drivers. Restart after installation if needed.
- Use the manufacturer’s page if Windows finds nothing. Identify the laptop’s exact model and installed Windows version, then look for a matching audio driver on the laptop maker’s official support site. Do not substitute a package for a similar-looking model.
Windows may report that the best driver is already installed even when the laptop maker offers another version. If you check the manufacturer’s site, verify that the package matches both your precise laptop model and Windows version, and follow the maker’s installation instructions.

If sound stopped after an update
If audio worked before a Windows update and failed afterward, try the driver’s rollback option before assuming that a newer driver is needed. In Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers, open the audio device’s Properties → Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver if the button is available. Restart and check whether sound returns.
The rollback option may not be available. Depending on the symptoms, Microsoft also documents checking for pending Windows updates and restarting the Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services. These are troubleshooting measures, not routine maintenance.

If updating does not fix the problem
Microsoft documents two further options: uninstalling the audio device in Device Manager and restarting so Windows can reinstall its driver, or selecting the generic Windows audio driver in Device Manager. Treat these as troubleshooting steps rather than regular upkeep. Save your work before uninstalling a device, and follow Windows’ prompts during recovery.

Do not use the Windows Device Manager instructions as a guide for ordinary macOS. For Windows installed on a Mac with Boot Camp, Apple says Boot Camp Assistant normally installs Apple Windows support software. If built-in audio or other supported hardware is not working in Windows, check whether that support software needs to be installed for the Mac and Windows setup.
