No—you do not need to play every Kingdom Hearts release to follow Sora’s main journey. But the series connects story and character arcs across numbered games, prequels, side entries, and films, so skipping story-bearing material can leave gaps. If you want the fuller narrative, start with Kingdom Hearts and follow a first-time play order rather than the fictional chronology. If a game’s mechanics are not for you, use its included story presentation or a dependable recap to keep up.
What “understanding the story” means in Kingdom Hearts
There are two reasonable goals, and they call for different amounts of play. You can follow Sora’s central journey without completing every release. To understand how the wider cast and plot connections develop, you will get more context by covering the story material beyond the numbered games.

Square Enix describes the franchise as a collaboration with Disney and presents its central theme as “Light overcoming Darkness with the power of Friendship.” Its official series page also provides a high-level timeline. Neither that page nor the other sources cited here gives a definitive list of games that are mandatory or safe to skip.

For a newcomer seeking the fuller story, the publisher-hosted Epic Games Store guide recommends beginning with KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, then continuing through KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind, and Melody of Memory. The guide’s sequence is practical advice for a first playthrough, not a universal rule. Read the publisher-hosted play-order guide.

The Square Enix franchise page and collection page confirm the series’ collections and describe some content as a movie or short connecting episode. Collection presentations mean you do not always need to play the original version of every story-bearing release to see its narrative. Another independent guide also recommends starting with Kingdom Hearts and distinguishes a first-time route from chronological order; its ordering of some presentations differs, so treat the sequence above as a useful path, not an immutable checklist. See the independent first-time order guide.
Why chronological order is not the best starting point
Some Kingdom Hearts entries take place earlier in the fictional timeline than the original game. That does not make them better introductions: a prequel may assume familiarity with characters, mysteries, or reveals introduced in earlier releases. For a first playthrough, start with Kingdom Hearts and follow a recommended release-oriented route; chronological order is better suited to someone revisiting the story.

Can you skip a Kingdom Hearts game?
You can skip a game’s gameplay if it is not for you, but there is no official universal skip list that establishes which story entries are irrelevant. The sensible compromise is to use the collection’s movie or story presentation when available, or a reliable recap for a skipped entry. That can preserve the broad plot while giving less space to a character arc and reducing the impact of its reveals.
Fuller route or shorter route?
| Approach | Story context | Time and gameplay commitment | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuller first-time route | Preserves more character and plot context across the recommended sequence. | Higher: you play more of the series. No verified total playtime is available here. | Players who want the connected story and are comfortable with varied game formats. |
| Shorter route with story presentations or recaps | Covers broad narrative connections, but may lose detail and emotional impact from side-character arcs. | Lower: some gameplay is replaced with a movie or recap. | Players mainly interested in Sora’s central journey or who dislike a particular game’s mechanics. |
Choose based on how much context you want, how much gameplay you are willing to take on, whether the relevant collection is available on your platform, and whether you are satisfied with recaps instead of playing the original game. The sources do not quantify how much story context any one shortcut removes.

Where to find the collections
Square Enix currently lists KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III], bundling KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind. The publisher describes it as a way to “Experience the full story of KINGDOM HEARTS!”—product positioning, not a guarantee that every optional release or all mobile-story details appear in every edition.
The official collection page lists digital stores and physical formats for PlayStation and Nintendo Switch 2. Availability and included content vary by platform and edition, so check the listing for the version you intend to buy. A collection is a convenient way to follow the route, but it does not include Melody of Memory in the bundle described on that page.
