No. You can use Microsoft Copilot for free without a Microsoft 365 subscription. A subscription becomes useful when you want Copilot integrated into supported Microsoft 365 apps, plus the plan’s storage, desktop applications and other services. The exact AI features, usage limits and sharing rules depend on the plan, your account and your region.
The most important catch is Microsoft 365 Family (and Premium) sharing: the subscription owner receives the plan’s in-app AI benefits. Those benefits do not automatically extend to every person invited to the subscription.
What you get with free Copilot
Microsoft’s free Copilot experience is available without buying Microsoft 365. You can ask questions and receive answers that use real-time web search. In Microsoft Edge, free Copilot can also summarize webpages and provide insights about their contents. These uses happen through Copilot itself rather than through a paid Word, Excel or PowerPoint entitlement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

It does not mean that every Copilot feature is free, nor that free users receive the same app integration, usage allowance or premium capabilities as a Microsoft 365 subscriber.

Microsoft distinguishes the free service from Copilot included with individual Microsoft 365 plans. Its explanation of the difference is available in Microsoft’s free-versus-Microsoft 365 comparison.
What a Microsoft 365 subscription adds
Copilot inside supported Microsoft 365 apps
Microsoft 365 subscribers can sign in at Microsoft365.com or use the Microsoft 365 mobile app. Subscription owners can also use Copilot inside Microsoft 365 desktop applications when their plan and account support that feature. Microsoft’s examples include using Copilot to plan, draft or polish writing, work with email and create presentations. They are examples of supported scenarios, not a promise that every function is available in every edition, region or account.
In-app access matters because the assistant can work in the context of the document, message or presentation you are editing. Free Copilot can answer web questions, but it is not a substitute for an entitlement that places Copilot controls directly in a supported Microsoft 365 application.

The purchase is not only an AI decision. Microsoft’s individual-plan page lists the familiar productivity applications—Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote—along with OneDrive storage and other Microsoft services. The precise application list, storage amount, account requirements and local terms should be checked on the plan page for your country.
If you would not otherwise use the applications or storage, paying for Microsoft 365 solely to obtain occasional chat answers may be poor value; free Copilot already covers that basic form of use. If you need the desktop apps, cloud files and Copilot in those apps, the subscription bundles several needs into one purchase.

Microsoft 365 Personal, Family and Premium compared
The following figures are the prices displayed on Microsoft’s US individual-plan page on October 13, 2026. They are monthly prices, not a worldwide or permanent quote. Microsoft also presents annual billing, and prices, promotions, taxes and included services can differ by country and change over time.
| Plan | US monthly price shown October 13, 2026 | People covered | Copilot and usage positioning | Other stated value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Personal | $9.99 per month | One person | Higher Copilot usage than the free experience, with Copilot in supported Microsoft 365 apps for the subscription owner. Exact limits vary. | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive storage and other services listed on Microsoft’s plan page. |
| Family | $12.99 per month | One to six people for the Microsoft 365 services described on the page | Higher Copilot usage than free for the subscription owner. The owner’s AI benefits are not shared with every member. | The same broad Microsoft 365 application and storage bundle described for the plan; verify current regional details. |
| Premium | $19.99 per month | Not stated in the supplied plan summary; check the current Microsoft plan page for your market | Positioned above Family with the highest usage or selected premium-only capabilities. Limits and feature availability can change. | Microsoft describes additional or premium features alongside the standard Microsoft 365 applications and services; confirm the current list before purchase. |
See Microsoft’s current individual plan page for live prices, annual options, regional availability and the tier-by-tier feature list. The word “Copilot” alone is not enough to compare plans: storage, applications, number of covered people, usage limits and premium-only features all affect the value.

How Family and Premium sharing actually works
Adding people to a shared subscription does not give every person the subscription owner’s Copilot entitlement. Microsoft states that the AI benefits in Family and Premium are available only to the owner and cannot be shared.
There is a subtle distinction for other household members. Microsoft’s FAQ describes Copilot Chat access when a shared-plan user signs in with the Microsoft account associated with that subscription. That chat access should not be confused with the owner’s in-app AI benefits in Word, Excel, PowerPoint or other supported desktop applications. Each person should sign in with the account that actually holds their entitlement, and availability can vary by plan and region.
Before buying Family for a group, decide who needs Copilot inside documents and presentations. If several people need those owner-level in-app features, a single shared plan may not meet that requirement; compare the available individual entitlements rather than assuming that six people means six full Copilot licenses.

Why Microsoft does not publish one permanent Copilot quota
Copilot usage is not a single universal number. Microsoft says limits depend on the plan, the feature being used, the entry point (for example, a web experience versus an app) and current system conditions. Limits can change as AI models and capabilities become available.

Check Microsoft’s AI credits and limits documentation immediately before subscribing if a specific workload—such as frequent image creation, long document work or repeated presentation generation—matters to you.
For a practical comparison, ask these questions:
- Is the feature available in your country and in the Microsoft 365 application you use?
- Does your account own the subscription, or is it merely a member of a shared plan?
- Is the stated allowance monthly, subject to change, or dependent on system demand?
- Does Premium unlock a capability you actually need, rather than only a larger allowance?
Which option fits common use cases?
Choose free Copilot when you need web help
Use the free service if you mainly want web answers, explanations, brainstorming, webpage summaries in Edge or occasional drafting outside Microsoft 365 files. You can start without entering a Microsoft 365 subscription.
Choose Personal when one person needs app integration
Personal is the straightforward choice when one user needs Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook or OneNote together with Copilot in supported applications. It also adds OneDrive storage and the other services listed by Microsoft. Compare the annual price and local terms before deciding whether the monthly option is worthwhile.
Choose Family when several people need the productivity bundle
Family can cover one to six people for the Microsoft 365 services described on Microsoft’s page, making it useful when several people need the applications and storage. Do not count every invited member as receiving the owner’s Copilot AI benefits. The owner restriction is the deciding factor for households where multiple people expect in-app Copilot.

Consider Premium for heavier or advanced use
Premium is positioned as adding higher usage and selected features beyond Family. It makes sense only when those additional capabilities justify the higher price. Because Microsoft can change limits and feature availability, verify the live plan description instead of relying on an old quota, review or screenshot.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to start using Copilot
Starting with free Copilot
- Open Microsoft’s Copilot experience and sign in if the feature or your preferred history settings require an account.
- Ask a question, request a draft or use web-based research prompts.
- In Microsoft Edge, open a webpage and invoke Copilot to request a summary or insights when that control is available.
Starting with Microsoft 365 Copilot
- Buy or activate the Microsoft 365 plan under the Microsoft account that should own the subscription.
- Sign in at Microsoft365.com or in the Microsoft 365 mobile app with that same account.
- Install or update the supported desktop applications included with your plan.
- Open Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook or another supported app and look for the Copilot control. The exact control and available actions depend on the app, plan, account and region.
- If you are using Family or Premium as a member rather than the owner, confirm whether your account has chat access; do not assume that the owner’s in-app AI entitlement has been transferred to you.
Common problems and what to check
Copilot is missing from Word or another desktop app
- Confirm that the application is included in your plan and updated to a supported build.
- Sign out and back in with the account that owns the subscription; a personal and work account can easily be confused.
- Check the plan page and Microsoft Support for regional or feature-specific availability.
- Remember that free Copilot access does not automatically add an in-app Copilot control to a desktop application.
A Family member cannot use the owner’s AI features
This is expected under Microsoft’s sharing rule. The owner receives the Family or Premium AI benefits. A member may have Copilot Chat access when using the account associated with the subscription, but that is a different entitlement from the owner’s in-app features.
You hit a limit sooner than expected
Review the current limits page rather than an older article. Microsoft says limits vary by feature, entry point and system conditions, so changing the task, waiting for a reset or using a supported entry point may produce a different result. Do not treat a displayed allowance as permanent.
What to verify before paying
Use Microsoft’s live plan page for your country and check the billing term, tax treatment, renewal price and cancellation conditions. Then verify the number of people covered, storage, desktop applications, Copilot entry points and any premium-only feature you intend to use.
