No—not automatically. If a small website changes only occasionally, checking its pages with the Nu HTML Checker when you edit them may be enough. A project linter is more useful when you make frequent changes, reuse page templates, or want the same checks to run reliably as part of development. The right choice depends more on how you maintain the site than on how many pages it has.

What an HTML checker or linter can—and cannot—do

HTML checking can flag unintended markup mistakes and potential problems related to parsing, compatibility, usability, accessibility, security, maintainability, performance, or scripts. Treat the results as prompts to investigate, not proof that every problem has been found.

The Nu HTML Checker makes this distinction explicit: “The Nu Html Checker should not be used as a means to attempt to unilaterally enforce pass/fail conformance of documents to any particular specifications; it is intended solely as a checker, not as a pass/fail certification mechanism.” Its checks also evolve, so a report can change as checks are added. Nu HTML Checker documentation

Passing an HTML check does not establish that a page is accessible or good. W3C WAI describes validation as one technique that can help avoid ambiguities, but its techniques are examples, not required methods for WCAG conformance. W3C WAI: G134 W3C’s validator help likewise says that a page passing validation does not mean W3C assesses it as a good page. W3C Markup Validation Service help

Compare options by setup burden, repeatability, speed of feedback, ability to customize rules, and compatibility with tools you already use. An online check is the lightest starting point; automating checks makes more sense when it prevents recurring manual work or catches regressions during frequent edits. There is no evidence-based page-count cutoff.

When does a small website benefit from a project linter?

Consider one if you edit pages often

Repeated changes give markup mistakes more chances to creep in. A configured linter can apply the same selected rules each time, rather than relying on you to remember a manual check.

Consider one if pages share templates or components

A shared header, form, or page template can spread a mistake across multiple pages. Repeatable checks can help catch certain markup issues as you work, though they do not replace reviewing the rendered site or testing user-facing behavior.

Skip a new dependency if checks are rare and the setup adds overhead

If you make occasional edits and do not already use Node.js, do not add Node solely because a linter is available. A hosted checker or an editor feature may be enough for your needs. If Node is already part of your workflow, adding HTMLHint as a development dependency can make checks repeatable. This is a workflow trade-off, not a performance claim.

How to add HTMLHint to a Node-based project

HTMLHint’s getting-started guide documents this basic setup. Its Node.js 22-or-later requirement is version-sensitive; check the current documentation before installing.

  1. From your project directory, install HTMLHint as a development dependency: npm install --save-dev htmlhint.

  2. Initialize a .htmlhintrc configuration file using the setup described in the HTMLHint getting-started guide.

  3. Choose rules that suit your site. The guide’s examples include checks for alt attributes, duplicate IDs, form labels, document language, page title, and main landmarks. These can catch selected issues, but they do not amount to a complete accessibility audit.

  4. Run HTMLHint against your HTML files: npx htmlhint "**/*.html". Review reported issues and decide which are real problems for your pages.

If that setup feels disproportionate to your editing routine, use an online check when you change a page instead.

Does valid HTML mean the site is accessible?

No. Validation is one useful technique for finding markup problems and reducing ambiguity, but accessibility also depends on how people can understand and operate the page. A passing report does not prove WCAG conformance, usability, or content quality. Use HTML checks alongside appropriate accessibility evaluation, not as a substitute for it.
